AM=amplitude modulation
FM-frequency modulation

AM (amplitude modulation) band as opposed to FM (frequency modulation). In the 1970s, most American Top-40 music stations were still on AM. FM was mostly the domain of classical music and album-oriented rock AKA stoner music stations.
