The Daily Show - July 6, 2004 (Nader and Colbert)

Just wanted to check if I was the only one who wasn’t hugely disappointed that Jon Stewart wasn’t around to interview Ralph Nader on last night’s The Daily Show? I love Stephen Colbert’s normal routines, and he did fine in the rest of the sit in, but I thought he was a bit week in the interview. IMO Stewart wouldn’t have let Nader run roughshod over him and just give him the bully pulpit (he would have made him earn it). Sad because it could have been a great interview and instead felt mostly like a Nader campaign spot.

I’m a bit confused; do you mean “was disappointed” instead of “wasn’t disappointed”?

I like Stephen Colbert’s “location” reports, but he didn’t seem to have command of the desk as well as Stewart. Of course, Ralph Nader probably isn’t the easiest guest to deal with.

So, apparently Jon Stewart’s a dad now.

Um, is it just me or is Nadar bugshit insane?

I mean, he doesn’t really believe he’s going to get the vote of 39 million hispanic Americans because his VP is hispanic right?

Colbert was kinda weak, but that’s probably because he was running off of a short notice and using materials written for Jon. If he had time to prepare and a writring staff writing for his personal style, he’d be better.

But Jon has spawned, and that is good. Yeah, as much as I agree with Nader about ending the duopoly, he’s severally overestimating his own appeal, especially to the non-far left.

Nope, but I think the clinical term is “batshit insane.”

Jon Stewart gave up an intrerview with Nadar so he could be with his wife? What a mensch!

Oops. I combined “bug-shagging crazy” with “batshit insane.” Well, he’s probably both.

Sorry, got carried away with the negatives there (ok, I actually reworked the sentence to make it worse than it originally was). I did mean that I wanted to see Stewart do the interview. I can’t believe that he chose being with his new child over Ralph Nader. Newborn kids are a dime-a-dozen. Bug-shagging-crazy-batshit-insane-independent-presidential-candidates, or at least those that might pull 2-5% of the vote, are a bit more hard to come by.

I dunno, I think he did a pretty good job of punching holes in his facade with the “Who wants Cool Ranch Doritos?!” question to the audience (APPLAUSE!), which Nader didn’t seem to get.

Awww, what a cute baby!

As for Nader, of course he had to show up when Jon was gone because he has the worst timing in the woooooorld

That was my reaction, too. If only the baby could have waited till today, when Will Ferrell is the guest.

I didn’t see any baby pictures, btw. Where are baby pictures?

Yeah, it’s a damned shame that it worked out that way. (Of course it’s luvverly that he’s a daddy now.) I can actually see Jon Stewart’s take on the thing – it could have benefited enormously from just one of the man’s incredulous looks.

It was still pretty good, though. Colbert is a funny guy, and Nader is intrinsically funny (except, of course, when threatening to saddle the world with another nightmarish four years.)

I feel the same vague sort of disappointment I might feel if I got laid by Meg Tilly – knowing it might have been Jennifer, except for a scheduling mixup.

Due respect, I disagree. Jon is famously deferential to leftists. In fact, he often leads them into anti-right diatribes and then plays off the ensuing deluge.

Yeah, but in this case, I think Jon is well aware of the very real threat Nader poses to steal enough votes to let Shrub slip through again. When he said, Oh, well, anyone but Bush, I yelled “Then this year, STAY HOME!!!”, and I’d like to think Jon might’ve thrown some of that at him.

The picture of Jon’s new baby was actually a drawing by Jon, of a smiling baby with a huge head and little round body. Then he drew his son at 5 a.m. and it was the same drawing but with the mouth open and bawling

Good new-father bonding with Will Ferrell, too.

Typical political speak. There are those who feel that putting an african american on the ticket will get you ‘the black vote’. Or that getting a woman on the ticket will ensure that all women will vote for you.
