I saw a new guy the other day who was hilarious. During an interview he went naked twice with his hair in a “shampoo mohawk” . During another part of hios interview, he made whining noises to mock the person he was interviewing. I don’t see him on the website but he was funny.
Oh, c’mon - the bit with the footage of Kerry snowboarding with a dubbed-over imitation of him saying snowboard lingo in a monotone was comedic gold.
I don’t know, I think this is the beauty of Jon Stewart. I agree that Kristol has criticized the administration before, but IMHO a high power columnist certainly doesn’t go on a comedy show to get cornered like that. Even if it wasn’t done with malicious intent or manuevering, Kristol did end up saying “Bush drove us into a ditch.” Stewart seemed shocked by it; IIRC he even apologized to Kristol and said that he hadn’t seen Kristol so easily cornered before. Kristol responded with something along the line of “Well, yeah, it’s been a tough week and it’s easier to speak your mind up here in New York than in Washington.” I don’t know if he was off of his game or tired or upset with Bush and wanting to speak the truth or whatever. It is a great example of how Jon Stewart can use his “we’re a fake news show, just relax and have fun in your 5 minute interview” schtick to get people to lower their guard and give good interviews. This without getting directly confrontational and never have I seen a guest seem upset after an interview…
I’ve never seen it either, but do you remember that guy who was on a couple of months ago to pimp his book about crazy Hollywood people? It was trashy, tabloid journalism. Stewart knew it, and he let the guy know it. He didn’t take the interview too seriously or anything, but at the end, the author said something like ‘This isn’t just a sleazy book about celebrity meltdowns-’ and Stewart cut him off by saying ‘Yes it is- that’s exactly what it is!’ The guy can’t have been happy. For that matter, I doubt John Stossel was pleased with how his interview went.
Mssr. Stewart will get bi-partisan viewership as long as he remains funny. He can make fun of Bush all he wants, but it better be funny. Once the ha-ha goes away, so do the ratings. And generally speaking, he is chock full of ha-ha. Every so often, he takes it a bit far, or just tells a dumb joke, but I would guess that the writers deserve a fair share of blame when that happens.
But to call him ‘non-partisan’ is a joke (non ha-ha). He gives Nader and Moore a pass, to say the least, but then guffaws and gets smarmy when he has a Stossel on. To be fair, though, he seemed to be pretty nice to Gingrich when he was on.
Again, none of that ‘fair’ or ‘partisan’ crap means a thing, so long as he remains funny.
I think Stossel is more libertarian, and Stewart was all gung ho about his advocacy of civil liberties, but the moment Stossel advocated economic freedom, Stewart backed off and said something like, “Woah, I was with you up until that.” It seems to me that he is basically a leftist who pretty much makes fun of leftist strawmen and caricatures (like the Bl(a)ck Tea Party, for example), but not really of leftist ideals. He’ll poke fun of a Republican tax cut, but not a Democratic tax increase. On the other hand, he’ll poke fun of how a Republican or Democrat gives a speech.
I’ve always wondered if SOME of those people know that they are being interviewed by a fake newscaster.
The Back in Black segments have always been my favorite BTW…
