Okay, so we’re saying that some of the puke, shit and blood is getting aerosolized and that’s why they need positive-pressure respirators?
If you want my complete honest thoughts about it, and considering the updates we’ve had about until now…then yes, I think a quarantine or isolation of all people who have been in contact with someone with Ebola should be the case. If they don’t have it, great…then in 1 or 2 or 3 weeks you can go when it’s proven you’re not getting sick.
If they do, though, then it’s a good thing we caught them.
But wait, an Inconvenience? Having jobs and a life? Sorry, I think the risk of a deadly virus like this becoming a pandemic is just slightly more important right now. 21 days isn’t that long and it definitely beats the alternative.
Two days ago I’d have been more of your opinion, but at the end of today, I’m starting to think more and more that testing and isolation and monitoring of all possibly infected parties is the best way to go here. At least right now that number is (relatively) low (if I’m to count all of people who were on the plane). 3-150 people is not 1000+ people. Yet.
And yes, I know that Ebola can only be passed on to two people max (apparently) and that it would take a long time to get that bad and that now is not the time to worry yet.
But I also think that so far it’s been handled VERY poorly and unprofessionally and that they need to start stepping up and treating this much more seriously than they have been.
Great, some ashhole breaks quarantine and sneezes on me at the grocery store. As a result, I and my family are confined to my home for 21 days. I lose my job, can’t pay my rent or the bills, the utilities are shut off, I’m rendered homeless… and I don’t get sick. But I have nowhere to live, no job, no money…
Sure. Strict quarantine BUT I want it to be impossible for my employer to fire me and the government to pay my bills in the meanwhile so complying with the public good doesn’t destroy my life.
Is that agreeable to you? Fair trade?
Who’s the guy in plain clothes helping to transport the latest victim?
We do appear a bit inept in how we’re handling this.
Was just going to post about that story as well.
Unbelievable for several reasons including:
- How could the guy be so stupid.
- Why didn’t anyone else there say something and just stop him.
This thing has to be treated with respect or a lot of people could die.
Congress should quit party fighting and pass a bill to that effect.
If the patient is wearing a hazmat suit, there should be no danger. The other guys wearing hazmat may need to assist the patient on the aircraft. Her hazmat may fail during the flight.
Hello Chicken Little! The most likely explanation for why that guy isn’t in a bio hazard suit is because he’s the pilot of the plane, and you can’t fly a plane while wearing a bio hazard suit. Amber Vinson is fully dressed in a suit and, if the suit is as effective as advertised then there should be absolutely 0 percent chance of her infecting anybody on the plane. The people assisting her are likely in bio hazard suits just in case something happens during the trip and they need to assist her.
If people can’t wear plain clothes around people in bio hazard suits then what good are the suits?
Did no one actually read the article?
“His role is to oversee the process of transport including on the tarmac,” Randy Davis, vice president at Phoenix Air, told NBC News. "Part of our protocol is to have 1 person NOT in a bio-Hazard suit. "
Davis said the man, who he did not name,* is the team’s medical safety coordinator. Standard protocol is for him to wear street clothes, *Davis said, because the suits can block field of vision and hearing. Davis said the man has been trained on keeping safe distance from patients and is ready to “suit up” if needed.
Ah I was reading a different link that didn’t have that info in it.
Seemed strange especially since he took something off a guy with a suit on so had a form of contact with them.
Anyhoo seems to be answered.
I case of ready, fire, aim on my behalf.
One would imagine that quarantine would fall under the FMLA or something.
Also, a lot of companies came up with pandemic policies during the swine flu scare.
But I agree…we should have a plan so people stuck at home have food, utilities, and money.
FMLA is UNPAID medical leave.
Look, for someone wealthy a 21 day quarantine with no pay/income is annoying as hell, but for someone in my position it would be absolutely devastating. If you want people to comply with such a thing you have to make it possible for them to comply without completely devastating their lives and families.
Why would anyone have to be quarantined 21 days except those confirmed to have it?
There have been ongoing examples of people thought to have been exposed who have been tested and confirmed negative within a day or two.
They might develop symptoms and become contagious while not quarantined.
Not if they’ve been tested and found to be negative, or am I missing something. For example this guy
How long does it take to be detectable after exposure?
CDC director Tom Frieden “the incubation period of Ebola is two to 21 days but generally within the first ten days.”
I’m talking to myself…what is *that *a symptom of?
According to Wiki, an incubation period is the time between infection and when symptoms first appear. That’s not the same thing as when the virus is detectible in the blood.
Obviously it isn’t detectable immediately. I wonder how long it takes. If you isolate someone from the possible infection time to the end of the incubation time, you could be absolutely sure they were not infected.
According to theCDC:
“Ebola virus is detected in blood only after the onset of symptoms, usually fever. It may take up to 3 days after symptoms appear for the virus to reach detectable levels. Virus is generally detectable by real-time RT-PCR from 3-10 days after symptoms appear.”
I consider myself corrected and educated.
