The Dark Knight (spoilers) -- I hate this trope

There’s an audible mechanical whirl as he activated some sort of tool built into his palm. A minute latter, he uses the same tool to cut into the outside of the Scarecrow’s escape van. This tech is ditched for the knew lighter and faster suit – which was a welcome bit, pointing out how Batman is ninja first, not Iron Man.

I find it absolutely plausible that people wouldn’t notice the unpainted Joker would be able to infiltrate the funereal firing squad, or that people wouldn’t automatically see that Batman is Bruce Wayne. People, by and large, don’t really look at stuff they see on a regular basis unless it’s directly related to what they’re doing–their eye passes over it, and their brain processes what they want or expect to see, not necessarily what’s really there. So you’ve got a guy in a police uniform acting exactly as you expect him to act, and you’ve got other shit to do. So your eye just sort of skates over him being pale (he’s never-gets-in-the-sun pale, not grease-painted, in that scene) and his scars (which the mind wants to do even if you’re talking to him) and off you go about your business. Other people have already addressed the Bruce Wayne being the act thing, so I’ll shut up about that.

The only other comment I have is that it constantly surprises me when people act all surprised at how dark this set of movies is. I mean, the whole premise is that this guy has suffered utterly horrific mental and emotional trauma as a child, and it’s fucked him up so deeply that he spends the rest of his life instilling the sort of fear and helplessness he felt then into the sort of people who inflicted it on him. He dissociates himself from the person who suffered so horribly, makig that persona a mask, a cipher who never really forms significant emotional ties to anyone or anything new. With a central character like that, how could the Batman universe not be some seriously dark shit?

I’m a little puzzled as well as to why people don’t understand why the disguise works.

If someone I knew casually put on a Batman costume and disguised their voice and mannerisms I probably wouldn’t know who it was.
