The decline of the motel

Oh, I liked the neon sign. It’s just that particular stretch with that weird mid-block on-ramp to the 405 was always depressing to me.

My dad should have ended up at Uni, as his family kept moving west – one step ahead of the rent collectors. It was the Depression, after all. He continued at Fairfax until graduation and hitchhiked to school. Once, George Murphy, actor and one-time California senator picked him up. Later, my second cousins went to Uni. They must have lived really close to you!

A lot of my friends went to Uni. I went to Webster Jr High and just a small group of us who weren’t bussed in were split off to Venice. It was just he people from our elementary school.

FYI, the New York Times ran an article recently (gift link) about motels that are being bought up and revived, with substantial investment.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned the Foothills Motel in Auburn, CA, which got completely renovated a few years ago and now appears to be getting rave reviews online. They definitely appear to be part of this trend.

I’ve seen several of these high-end remodels of motels in this area and we’ve stayed in a couple. Less expensive than higher-end hotels, but still a lot nicer than what you expect out of a motel.

I’m finally getting around to looking at these. I love them.

For the ones that have the address, I’m enjoying using google maps to see what is there now. Some are under a new name, but strll recognizable.

Thanks for these!

Last Friday evening I stayed at a motel (this one) for the first time in decades. Clean room, three beds, refrigerator, microwave oven, and a Keurig. Only $60.

Did something change in your page? Or is it at my end? I can’t access them any more.

I tested it a couple of times(tried it in different browsers), still works for me. I went back to the album and the “share link” is the same (the discord bot even asked me if I wanted to post a duplicate link). So who knows?

I’ve added around 30 cards to my collection recently, so once I get motivated again I’ll get them scanned and post here with an update.

Thanks It did work on this computer, once, but who knows. Could have a software update that screwed it up. I’ll try another one.

Works on my other computer, Thanks!

These are great.

Just finished uploading a new batch if anyone’s interested. Same link as before.

Cool thing about this is my phone notified me about your new upload before you did!!

Besides the motel featured in the article, the Safari Inn was also mentioned.

Safari Inn is about a ten minute drive from Warner Bros, Universal, Disney, and NBC.

The Pink Motel is about 20-25 minute drive.
