Zoggie, I’ve been saying the same thing for about 5 years now. Some of the music I remember fondest was from the summer of '94 - Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, STP, Pearl Jam, James, Alice in Chains. A couple years later, the “alternative” bands flooded the market, and you had crap like Screaming Trees. Now, it’s all teenybopper pop or punk posers like Blink 182. I agree, Lizard that it goes in cycles. Shortly after the British invasion in the '60s, you had a lot of one-hit wonders or general crap-mongers (Gerry and the Pacemakers, Dave Clark Five, etc.) who failed to evolve along with the Beatles and the Stones when the tone of rock and roll changed in the late '60s and early '70s. Same’s gonna happen now. Music will suck for a while, but real rock and roll will make another comeback; it always does. I have faith. And in the meantime, I’ll have to look a little harder for good music (a couple of years ago, I was introduced to Elliott Smith, Built to Spill and Modest Mouse, and it was like a revelation), and I have the oldies stations, the classic rock stations, and WXRT to keep me sane.
As for 13-14 year olds not following the herd-music instinct, it can happen. When I was 12 and 13, I was listening to U2, INXS, the Beatles, etc., and never liked, say, the New Kids on the Block. Really! It’s true! One thing I can be proud of…
Re: the Rolling Stone article, I had the same reaction as y’all. “Baby One More Time” number 24?! How could you lump that dung in with “Yesterday” and “Billie Jean”? Barf.
My bitch is about when metallica went pussy on me
I would rather listen to unabashedly “pop” ear candy than
ANYthing these assholes put out from the black albumn on.
Also…
if Napster had been out during the time period they released
Kill em all…they’d have jumped on it.
bastards
holier than thou posuer punk ass bitches,
dammit, I miss Metal.
Oh, like the Rolling Stones haven’t sucked ass for 25 years!
And the Beatles had some great songs, but they put out some complete crap as well. Not to mention some heinous music from their solo careers.
Doesn’t ‘POP’ stand for popular? Or are we playing that ‘definitions that only true hipsters know’ game?
Maybe they looked 'em up on the internet, bought a couple a records, maybe even read a book about them. Or do you actually have to be an adult at the time it was released to appreciate something? BTW, aren’t you a little young to talk about Smokey and Roy Orbison, Nacho4Sara? These guys were dinosaurs in my long ago misguided heavy metal days.
You guys make it sound like sucky music is a new invention. Hah! I lived through disco!!!
[sub]there is actually good music being played these days. you just have to look a little harder than you used to.[/sub]
