I think the Peter Haining book on ol’ Sweeny is complete fiction. And yeah, I have it & enjoy it thoroughly. And I think any criminologists who do verify it & then only quote it as their source are in on the joke.

I agree. I tried to get it when it was on LD–had it on order from a place that claimed to have it–but it never materialized. Why it hasn’t been released on DVD is a mystery to me. I’d think there would be a demand, particularly if they could add a commentary track as they did with the LD/DVD release of Sunday in the Park with George.

Also, has anyone heard or read about Steven Spielberg wanting to do a film version of Sweeney Todd? I saw a brief mention of this horrifying (to me, anyway) bit of news in a story about the recent rush to produce film musicals in the wake of Chicago’s box office success. I’d like to see someone do it, but Spielberg? I’m ambivalent about this news.
