The Derrick Rose Situation. Opinions?

OK, but now we’re back to my original point.

I said: why would the fans not want Rose to be cautious now in the interest of being healthy and good when the playoffs come?

You said: he doesn’t get to decide that.

I said: The people who do get to decide that are also OK with it, and presumably would rather he be healthy for the playoffs than play in meaningless games now.

You said: OK, but the fans disagree.

So now I’m back to my original question: why would the fans not want Rose to be cautious now in the interest of being healthy and good when the playoffs come?

They don’t trust him. And they don’t trust the Bulls coaches and ownership. If you really want to get deep, I would suspect there’s a great deal of jealousy and a feeling of loss over the continued failure of the “inner-city kid makes good” story in Chicago. They’re fans. Rationality isn’t their strong suit. If you like, perhaps you can get them all some time in counseling.

Now, if you ask me, I think it’s for the best for the Bulls that Derrick gets to rest up, as long as the Bulls stay in the hunt for a top seed. At the same time, I also think he’s a weak-willed prima donna, that he’s unwilling to sacrifice his immediate discomfort to help lessen his teammate’s, and that the Bulls are lying if they say they don’t have the same concerns.

So you think he’d be less of a weak-willed prima donna if he didn’t do the thing that you think is best for his team?

Yeah, I don’t think we’re going to agree on this one.

We likely won’t, because you don’t seem to understand that someone can do what might end up being the best thing for his team, and still be a weak willed prima donna.

Of course fans would want this.

Care to comment on what Rose actually said? He didn’t say he wanted to be healthy for the playoffs. He said he wanted to be healthy for his son’s graduation and future business meetings.

There would be absolutely no fan blowback if he said he wanted to be healthy for a playoff run. None. Zero. Zip. But that’s not what Rose said, and it’s not why fans are pissed.

What the devil is RG3? A person? A thing? A team? A play?

Point taken. But my objection seems to be the personal nature of the anger directed towards him, like Rose owes them something. I don’t think people owe me anything, I just like to complain

Rose is the kid from the bad neighborhood in Chicago who made it big. For many Chicago fans, he’s a symbol for escaping the projects and becoming successful in the city that he was born in. Because of that, I think many fans have a more personal connection to him, and thus, the attacks against him become more personal. I don’t think it’s fair, but there it is.

Because that’s not what he said. He said he didn’t want to be in pain when his career was over. No one would have a problem if he said I want to be 100% for the playoffs.

Well. Shit.

Yep. That and Kane out for six to ten weeks for the Hawks. What a wonderful night last night was for Chicago sports. :frowning:

Well, Maybe he should have taken it easy until he was back to 100%…

I have nothing bad to say about Derrick Rose. He’s a great player when healthy, just as Kobe Bryant is. But like Kobe, he’s been getting hurt like clockwork almost every season for several years now. That doesn’t make either man “soft.” but it does mean neither is a reliable presence.

Both men surely still have great games left. Both may even have a great season left. But NEITHER is a guy you can try to build a championship team around. And the Bulls have to stop trying. They need to plan for a long-term future without Rose.

Sadly I have to agree with Astorian. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence…the third time you draft a point guard.

Derrick Rose loves basketball more than you or I will ever love anything or anyone.

He wants to play the game he loves pain-free.

The Bulls pushed him back before he was physically and mentally ready.

Now he’s torn a meniscus and is done.

Way to go asswipes who called him soft.

Then he needs to retire. You don’t go into playing sports and expect to escape injury-free, or to stay out on the IR all the time collecting a paycheck. What’s more important – his health or his career?

(And as for playing injured, give me a break. You should see what hockey players play through during the play-offs.)

I am not an NBA fan, however I do follow sports and don’t turn the station when NBA news is discussed. So I know a bit about this situation.

IMO, Rose is done as a driving force in the league. Even if he comes back (and I would be shocked if he comes back this season, contrary to these 4-6 week reports), Rose is just one of those NBA players who is cursed to suffer from knee injuries.

If I were a Bulls fan or in Bulls management/ownership, I have to move on from Rose and look for my next point guard. You simply cannot build a team around a guy that is a breath away from being out for months on end.

I have no idea what his trade value might be. I suspect it is low. He has a huge contract, and he hasn’t been healthy for any significant playing time in what, 3 years now? That’s just bad, and he isn’t getting any younger.

It is sad, but NBA history is loaded with these sad stories. Greg Oden was the latest all-world big man to get drafted by Portland, and his body failed him, again and again. I am pretty sure he is out of the league now.

Rose was already worried about his post NBA life, and being able to walk normally. And that was before this latest injury. I cannot imagine he will be able to play another game without the thought of his knee going out again with each step he takes.

If he stays around the game, he will never be the MVP-caliber player he was once. He is just one sweat puddle or awkward landing on another player’s foot away from twisting/injuring his knees again. That will never escape his mind, and because of that, he won’t be able to relax and play the game he once played.

A shame. But Chicago has a nice team with some strong pieces in place. They need a guy at PG they can depend on to be there game after game, so they get used to playing with each other. Rose just isn’t that guy.

At the beginning of the season, I said any team counting on Rose lasting through the season was insane. His refusal to come back from injury in a timely manner which he later revealed because he didn’t want to be in pain when he got old … well he has no heart.

You people are insane, nobody should be asked to cripple themselves over a silly game. They pay him to play basketball, not to sacrifice his quality of life until he dies. They gambled, they lost. His own well being should obviously come before his basketball career and it is insanity to question that.

Fine. Let him just not get paid and I’m sure the Bulls will be happy.
