The Do Not Call List and Charities. Why?

Not sure if this is a Great Debate, a Pit thread (with obscenities removed) or an IMHO.

Here goes.

I love the Do Not Call list. Since I signed up…what, I guess 2 years ago or whenever it was…I have had virtually no telemarketing calls.

But.

I’m sick and tired of all the effing charities calling me now. I get around 2 per night, and 3 or 4 or 5 on weekends. It’s gotten to the point where (not having caller ID) I’m back to letting my answering machine answer just about every single call I receive. Or, I know that if I do answer and there’s a delay, it’s a (charity) telemarketing call. And it seems to have gotten far worse since the Do Not Call list went into effect.

Really pisses me off.

So, I guess the debate is - why are charities allowed to do this as opposed to for-profit companies. To me, it’s the same damn thing - an uninvited, rude, and unwanted element in my day. It’s my phone - don’t call me unless I know you and/or am expecting you to call.

The Do Not Call list should be as advertised (by name) - you are not allowed to call me regardless of your profit status.

And I should add - it’s gotten to the point that on the rare occassions where I end up answering and having to talk to you - you won’t be getting my money. Now, or ever.

You can, when you get these calls, simply recite something like the following: “We do not accept telephone solicitations at this number. Please put us on your ‘do not call’ list.”

Very few charities want to waste their time with people who have already said they won’t contribute.

The ol’ Telezapper still works.
