To elaborate on Peter Morris’ answer to this one, I believe that it was a space completely isolated from regular space-time (as long as you closed the door), and the reason that the TARDIS needed more energy (leading to its being jettisoned) was to prevent it from falling into the “hydrogen in-rush – Event one” (i.e. the Big Bang). I recall that they couldn’t be sure which part of the TARDIS would be jettisoned, and had to hope that it wouldn’t include the control room.
