I read a post on another message board. A guy made his wife a drink (irish cream, chocolate milk, and creme de menthe, and topped off with whipped cream). He goes to the kitchen to help his wife, and finds the doberman lapping at his wife’s drink. He said the dog stood there staring at him with a funny look, shook his head as if to get water out of his ears, then lay down heavily. The dog is asleep now.
A tiny tiny dog I knew ate a very very powerful magic brownie. She fell over trying to run up a flight of 3 stairs, and her head twitched back and forth. Though to be honest, she wasn’t in real danger of anything except the quantity of chocolate.
We’ve seen a few drunk dogs. There is a danger of alcohol poisoning depending on how much they imbibe relative to their size, your highball may not do much to you but it could be bad for a 5 pound chihuahua. Usually we just treat with fluids. Some dogs are happy drunks, some are mean drunks. They’re usually all a bit grumpy once the hangover hits.
According to a friend that has a dog that gets into everything, including glasses of beer, the beer’s main effect is to turn immediately into large quantities of pee and liquid-ish poo, which the dog is somewhat unable to restrain until he gets outside.
The owner has since become very vigilant about the possibility of the dog getting into beer.
I know a dog that used to tip over people’s drinks at parties, when they left them on the floor, so she could consume the beverage. She would often get three of four that way and being smaller dog, obviously got soused, and was basically a lush when she could get the opportunity. She suffered no ill effects, although it would be hard to tell as she always was a messed up stupid dog. Very cute though, so we put up with her still. She is pretty old now and in fine health as far as I can tell. I wouldn’t worry about one drink.
My recently departed Labrador-Rottweiler Bitz once drank most of a tumbler full of Captain and Diet on a camping trip. One of the guys set his cup down between a couple of stones so it wouldn’t tip over, then went to the treeline to take a leak.
The stones braced the cup perfectly. She got a little clumsy and went to lie down next to the next. She was awfully lethargic the next day but still obviously fine. No ill effects after the hangover passed.
