How many of us Dopers are fighting kidney disease? Check in and compare your treatments - not to be taken for medical advice… etc…
I’ve had Hemolytic Aneimic Syndrome at 2 years old, got 'em restarted and had 'em chugging along for fifty years. Now my GFR is slowly tanking and may be looking at a transplant down the road, currently around stage 4/5. So far, I’ve greatly reduced dairy and sob cheese n yogurt, no more nuts n seeds, bye bye most oatmeal, chocolate  , reducing beans, upping fruits n veggies along with white rice n sourdough, and increasing fish + fowl over pork/beef for good protein. Extra vitamin d, calcitriol, (for those pesky parathyroids) along with sodium Bicarb to support their remaining function.
What changes have you made to help your system limp along?
Hey! I can join a club. I have had diabetes since infancy. This past year Ive had a stubborn infection in my right kidney. I am just now having tests run and seeing a surgeon. Looks like I will lose the kiidney due to scarring and disease. I was lamenting the loss for a bit, now I am just tired of feeling ill. My lefty is hanging in there. Go Lefty go!! This kidney klub is a brilliant idea.
I’m not currently, but in the past I fought kidney stones, and the stones won the war with my right kidney. I try to be very nice to my left one, now that it’s all alone.
I’ve avoided teh 'beetus but have hypertension - controlled by stable meds.
My sodium dietary intake is kept low - I never got into the salt habit (Thanks Mom) except for the rare Cool Ranch Doritos habit - I never use salt in cooking and am always looking for lo/no salt items. I tend to use citrus, pepper, and vinegar flavors along with fresh herbs n spices.
It looks like both Lefty and Righty have gone walkabout in my case, with my buns in a chair 3 times a week. Phosphate is the main thing they hype at us, with binder horsepills before every meal. Oh, and protein, NEVER enough protein. Get a cup of sickly sweet goo to raise my protein every session. Don’t know if it works, but it makes all of us burp. Watermelon, Mango or {shudder} Grape ‘flavor’. Even better when the dose was made up a while before, and the syrup unmixed–I’ve been known to send it back to get mixed again.
Oh god! The horrors of the protein goo! There’s some bad things I’ve been forced to ingest, that is the worst, by far. Meal replacement shakes run a close second.
Jeebus, somebody please…we put a man on the moon…and all.
I’ve had Type 2 diabetes for 30 years, and was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease about 10-12 years ago. I take meds for high blood pressure, but still compromise with diet restrictions.
I’ve been getting IV antibiotics. They makes feel nauseous almost as soon as it gets in me. I have anti-nausea pills.
What pissed me today was the nurse who was hooking up to my PICC line, insisted this drug didn’t cause nausea. She lies.
I’m a nice person or I woulda told her to go jump in a river. I did tell the doctor on her. Yep. Beck is a tattle-tell.
Next week she’ll probably put poison in me.
I lost a kidney to renal cell carcinoma last summer. Not exactly kidney disease, but I’m now much more cognizant of what passes through the one I have. Can’t afford to lose it.
