I really like this group, The Duhks. It’s sort of bluegrass, sort of soul, contemporary Canadian folk music.
Their web site has clips featuring Jessica’s voice, although the other singers are just as talanted, from what I’ve heard. Apparently Bela Fleck produced the 2005 album. They seem to be fairly new; allmusic.com doesn’t have much information.
Great Big Sea got me into this style of music. What other bands have a sound similar to either Great Big Sea or The Duhks? I’m pretty music-illiterate, so I’d appreciate some suggestions.
NPR recently had a profile/interview with them on Fresh Air. They seemed to be a witty, talented bunch with an original slant on folk music. I was intrigued, but have yet to hunt down the CD.
I bought the CD based on the NPR show. I really like it and I never thought that I would like their kind of music. You look at a picture of them and you wouldn’t think that they make the music that they do.
Didn’t the NPR thing indicate that they made all of their instruments?
I looked for the NPR show and just finished listening to it–as I recall, the guitar player made his own guitar. But now I can’t remember much about what the others said about their instruments.
It looks like they had an album out a few years back, but there doesn’t seem to be any information about it on their website…seems to be out of print, if Amazon.ca is to be believed. I’ll probably purchase the recent album, though. So rare to find a band I really like.
From what I’ve gleaned, people see their videos occasionally on country music television stations. Not being a country music fan, I probably would have never listened to them had I not taken my sister’s advice for once.
I remember seeing this group when they (or part of they) were Scrüj MacDuhk. I think I saw the Duhks last year at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, but it was a “saying goodbye to friends who were leaving the country” weekend, so there was too much gin floating in my blood to allow long term memories to form.
Second thread about the Duhks in two weeks? What is the world coming to?!?
Leave 'em alone. They suck. Really, you don’t want to listen to them.
Yes, I’m bitter, because if you all start to like them, chances are they’ll stop showing up 2-3 times a summer to play in very small venues here in town.
There was another thread? I ran a search before I originally posted. I feel a little dumb!
I remember way back when I discovered Great Big Sea, I checked their tour dates and they had played the day before not half an hour from where I lived. I was probably too young to get into the venue, but I was still disappointed. They don’t come to Ohio all that often.
I think they’re great. They’re playing at a little bar here in Greensboro next month; I bought tickets a month and a half ago, since I figured they’d take off in the meantime and it would sell out right before I thought to pick them up.
It will help that they’re playing all four days at Merlefest this weekend.
