As much as I detest Trump, I think it would cause a bigger mess if the Electoral College put Hillary in the WH.
The election has already been a mess. Many (not all) of Trumps supporters have shown their anger. It would not surprise me one bit if that anger turned to violence if the EC did not elect Trump. And Trump would gladly stir that hornets nest. We’ll never hear the end of it.
I do think that the EC either needs to be reformed, or just go away. Not sure it really serves it’s purpose, or really what that purpose is.
If the EC where to elect Hillary, Oye.
I very much doubt this will happen, and the people that are pushing for it are in a way pushing for reform of the EC.
(Mods - Not sure if this would be a debate, or should belong in elections but it is my opinion. Please move as you see fit.)
I’d love it if that happened, and the trumpettes started riots.
Then I could make facebook postings telling them to shut up and accept the legal results, and stop rioting and making fools of themselves. Be able to say “we won. Get over it!”. Maybe make a few comments about safe spaces.
Isn’t this exactly the sort of situation for which the Founding Fathers created the Electoral College; where the people’s choice is crazy wrong?
Personally, I would not be unhappy if they elected Hillary Clinton, followed immediately by a Constitutional Amendment to remove the Electoral College.
That’s an interesting explanation. Now you can empathize with the birther movement. They entertained their fantasies because the reality of Obama taking office scared them.
Right, he was going to make us a Muslim nation and take away all the guns. Now I remember.
We’re afraid of Trump because of what he has said he believes and will do - and is, so far, doing - not what we’re making up about him. I think pretty soon even the dimmest “Not Hillary” voter will start to understand that.
Oh, for God’s sake. Some people must have entirely too much time on their hands if this sort of silliness is given any thought at all.
On Monday, the electors will vote pretty much as expected. There will probably be one or two faithless electors; my guess is one Trump and maybe one Clinton (truthfully, the Clinton electors have the best reason to go faithless, as their votes don’t really matter, but the Clinton machine in control of the Democratic Party might make life a bit uncomfortable for faithless Clinton electors).
Other than that, nothing spectacular will happen. Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States, barring strong evidence that he was informed of, and accepted the help of a foreign agent to win the election, which isn’t going to happen, either, so get over it.
No. The Electoral College was a compromise; the same compromise, actually, which gave us an equal number of Senators per state but apportioned the Representatives according to state population.
A popular vote for President was never something the Founders intended. The Electors were intended to be appointed by State legislatures and allowed to vote their conscience.
I think all he want’s to do is stay on TV every night (which in itself will suck) and fill his pockets. I HOPE that’s all he does. Now his cabinet is a worry. But I hope they just fill their pockets without completely striping the country and NOT doing too much harm to agencies like the EPA. Not sure though. A lot of other problems could/will prop up.
If the EC overturns this, the Trumpets are going to do EVERYTHING they possibly can to disrupt Hillary. Worse than what happened to Obama. And there is IMHO a high likely hood of serious violence.
Why get your hopes up? Why bother imagining scenarios of “Trumpets” disrupting President Hillary? It’s not going to happen because Trump is going to be president.
Oh, I don’t think it will happen at all. I’d be willing to bet money on it not happening. Doesn’t mean I can’t want it to happen. I want someone to give me a million dollars, also. And a pony.
Do you really think the fears are comparable in both cases? Remember that many Republicans, including senators and House members, were publicly saying that Trump was unqualified for the presidency. I thought his clown act (the outrageous statements and tweets) were just for the election. But he’s shown no sign of stopping.
