The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

You know it just occured to me. Percentile based skill system, Viking-esque background. You could make the most awesome Gloranthan based Orlanthi game with this. Shame it’ll never happen.

Newest weird bug: I level up, go to choose my skill point. I’m thinking I want something in one-handed, but when I go to that constellation thingy, my one-handed rating is set to 15, and it’s red. I’m going “WTF? I know I’m higher than 15 in one-handed!” but it won’t let me choose anything in that line because I don’t have the requisite talent points.

I choose something else, go back to playing. I get in a fight, use a one-handed weapon, and get a message my one-handed skill is now 27. Go back into the constellation thing, and now it’s 27 in white.

As far as I know, I was not diseased or anything. So is that a bug, or am I not understanding something?

And, for what it’s worth, I hate the constellation thing. Sure, it looks cool, but it’s clumsy as hell to maneuver and I’d sure the heck like some way of seeing what each of the skills are without traveling from star to star.

Poison, maybe? Being in red seems to indicate it was being drained somehow. Had you been fighting Falmer? Those little bastards love their poison arrows.

Just had the best death ever. Dragon on its last sliver of heath grabs me in its mouth, shakes me back and forth and chucks me off a mountain where I slam into a cliff. Awesome.

Are you absolutely sure? According to the wiki “Rockjoint” causes a 25% weakening of melee attacks.

Has anyone here completed Shroud Hearth Depths? If so, a question…

is there a way to get across the broken bridge in the room with the dragon power word in it? I’ve tried all sorts of things, including trying to use my force shout to dislodge the visible sword and coin pouch, but nothing seems to work

I’m actually finding the opposite - so far it’s been pretty easy. Were you playing Vanilla Oblivion? Once I found Oscuro’s Oblivion Overhaul back in the day, I never went back. OOO removed the mob leveling (among many other massive changes) and made the game brutally hard.

As in, for example Vilverin being freaking hard (and you can see it from the IC, for gosh-sakes.)

Loved that mod, always used it. Anyone still playing Oblivion should check it out. My only two Oblivion mod requirements were OOO and some sort of leveling mod (usually AF Level mod, but that one stopped updating years ago.)

Never used OOO but used a similar levelling mod. Could still kill absolutely anything in Oblivion with a maximum of two spells - a weakness spell and the finisher - but in Skyrim I’m starting all over without knowing elemental weaknesses. Found one boss in particular very tough, prepare yourselves if you’re going into Labyrinthian.

I can vouch that OOO is increadibly awesome, and much tougher.

Yeah, taking on an ogre at level 1 definitely tops anything Skyrim can offer.

On a different topic, where are you guys standing in the Empire vs Stormcloaks? I’m having a really tough time picking sides. In New Vegas it was easy; republican government vs. army of slavers vs. detached technocrat. Not hard to pick out the best option there, but in Skyrim everyone seems to be colossal dickbags in separate but equal measure.

Another question, now that I’m starting into the world. Please, spoiler everything that you think should.

Oblivion had a really terrible main quest effect - that is, once you went past a few quests into the main quest, Oblivion gates would spawn everywhere, repeatedly, and just wreck the experience.

I suspect the same is sure for Skyrim, but I’m not sure.

If what I really want is to run around and just enjoy guild and side quests, is there a point I shouldn’t cross? I have all my saves back to the intro of Skyrim, but I just killed my first dragon and I’m nervous about it. I want freedom in the game, real freedom. And for now that means I don’t want (yet) for dragons to be spawning everywhere and needing to be dealt with.

Reporting my experience: I’ve gotten to Whiterun but haven’t been to the Greybeards yet. After 21 hours of play, I’ve killed 5 dragons. So, at least until now, I’m not getting dragon-spammed.

Careful when fighting in populated areas; I failed the leather tanning mission when a dragon spawned in Riverwood and killed the mission giver (Tavor?).

I’ve only killed 2 dragons so far, both with help. The second was a surprise; it swooped down and attacked while I was in a village. I haven’t gone to the Greybeards yet, I’ve been doing side quests & exploring. I’ve contacted the Thieves Guild (MUCH harder than in Oblivion! Had to make quite the overland trek) and joined the Dark Brotherhood.

Since my Argonian guy is a straight rogue type, I think I’m going to start up a mage character. Magic looks cool, but he’s barely used any.

I’m pretty divided myself. Especially since my character is Argonian, and both sides appear to be racist.

Thirded, OOO greatly improves Oblivion.

Is there an easier way to switch between spells that I am missing? Using the Favorites seems really clumsy. I wish I could just hit numbers to cast spells but what it does it make that spell now the default for that hand.

I just got a daedric artifact that improves merchant prices for me, so I’m going on a shopping spree, going from town to town buying reagents and ingots. I’m still picking up quests and fighting dragons along the way. I haven’t even been to half of the holds yet. The game world is not only big, it’s “dense”.

You know what’s a nice little feature? On your map, there’s a little “-cleared” indicator on forts and caves and whatnot that you’ve cleared out. That would have been great to have in Oblivion.

Once an item or spell is in your favorites, then you can hotkey it. Just hover over it and press 1-8. Yeah, I know; kinda clunky. I don’t think you can map a right-left pair to a single key, which would have been nice.

13 and a bit hours in and i’ve fought two dragons. The scripted first one plus another where i literally stumbled over a fight between a giant and a dragon and just had to finish it off. I’ve covered a fair amount of ground too. My impression it that they are less common than oblivion gates. I would definitely play with dragons active as it’ll give you the chance to gather dragon powers. A visit to High Hrothgar to talk to the greybeards about dragon powers is worth it too.

One of my friends on steam had 32 hours logged in the game early this afternoon, which is quite a play session :stuck_out_tongue:

Simultaneous players of the game hit 275k on steam, which is definitely a record.

And I went ahead with it; a female Altmer. She’s been practicing her destruction magic hunting any animals that cross her path (and has actually managed to kill two rabbits, my bow guy never got one). There’s something very funny about the image of this human(ish) flamethrower chasing after some desperately fleeing elk. I keep imagining her laughing maniacally as she runs after anything that moves, continuously blasting flame from both hands.

Be careful of Bonechill passage, I had go try about 30 times before I could get through without a crash.

Not to mention the damn ice wraith who kicked my ass, I had to not crash and, run by the forzen bitch, that was a a pain However on the other side…

I met and killed my first solo dragon. Not exactly a battle worth of epic song though, I shot it in the ass with a about a hundred arrows. It got me trapped behind a pillar. And I’m not really an archer, so I had tons of basic arrows, and a basic longbow I was carrying to sell. It was just peek out shoot it in the ass. Then it would turn shoot fire at that side of the pillar, so I ran back to the other side and shot it in the ass there, rinse repeat.

You animal! Poor creature.

I wonder if dragons have proctologists.

I was gonna go Empire since there seemed to be some sort of relationship between them and the high elves (my race). But then I ran into some High Elf ambassadors and they were total dicks. So I thought Stormcloaks, until I found some dead Stormcloaks (killed by a troll) that were sent to kill me.

Do I have to pick a side, or can I remain unaffiliated?
