The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

I’m so scared to steal things. I took a book from the Whiterun mage’s desk because it didn’t have a red steal when I selected it but he sent hired thugs after me anyway. I was scared I’d ruined our relationship forever but I guess he got over it.

I’m trying to play a goody-two shoes if only because every time I try to steal stuff or pickpocket someone, I get creamed by guards.

Sorta the same thing happened to me, but I had actually stolen stuff. The thugs event seems to be scripted and they’re sent after you by the first person you wrong. I haven’t seen them since that one time. It’s discussed about 12 pages back.

I’ve stumbled upon dead thieves twice now in Riften. I arrived in time to watch the townsfolk kill the second one. I just throw them in the canal and they disappear after a few days. Think global, act local.

Books don’t have the red steal because you’re allowed to read them even if they belong to someone else and the first time you select them is to read rather than take/steal. When you’re reading them you’ll then see at the bottom corner whether pressing E again will mean you steal it or take it.

It’s not very obvious.

It’s weird that you can tick someone off so much that they hire killers to hunt you down, but the next time you see them, they seem to have forgotten all about it. You’d think at least they would be worried that you have come back for revenge.

In a couple of the guild quests you have to intimidate someone by beating the crap out of them. As soon as you are done, they are totally ready to resume normal interactions and even trade with you.

Yeah, I agree. I had a group of thugs sent after me. Funny though, because they appeared as I was walking out of some rundown fort’s prison and there were still a few renegade mages walking around the area (I hadn’t killed them all before entering). There was a big battle thugs vs mages - the mages won and I cleaned up. Apparently I pissed off a guard enough to have him send a hit squad out to me.

With all the little gripes and tweaks that people have, I’m really hoping Bethesda listens and figures out a way to implement these suggestions. They obviously have the graphical part down - this game is beautiful! Now just give us a whole bunch of these “little” things we want to see in the game.

On a side note, has anyone else had any items removed from your inventory - not by you? I was walking down a road when suddenly a message popped up that two of my treasure maps have been removed from my inventory - chests that I hadn’t looked for yet. I pretended that some other treasure hunter found it before me!

Damn. Are the treasure maps timebombed? I’ve been carrying around a couple for a loooong time.

I was doing a guild quest and got to the part where all hell is breaking loose in town, lots of combat and then A DRAGON shows up, and then THREE THUGS come after me for stealing a book in town and they apparently don’t notice I’m already fighting a dragon and a bunch of magical anomalies and then, I apparently hit someone in town with my chain lightning because everyone in town stopped fighting the anomalies, dragons and thugs to kick my ass. It pretty much ended up as me vs. everyone else in the world plus Scott Pilgrim.

Oddly enough… I was master of the Thieves’ Guild, but I never had a single thug sent after me for stealing anything. Weird.

Maybe you are lacking in elemental resistances?

I was stalking that fort last night when a dragon popped by. There’s nothing to destroy your stealthyness like a big, flying lizard dropping out of the sky.

I’ve also noticed that Lydia likes to sometimes go Leroy Jenkins on me. I’ve shot her in the ass once or twice by accident. I was sneaking up on Helgen, watching a guard. She went an killed him when I glanced around to make sure no one was flanking me. When I looked back, I thought the guard had changed positions, took my shot, and hit her in the butt. I’m glad she’s loyal, and decided not to kick my ass.

I was getting geared up to clear out a bandit fort when a dragon attacked me. After I killed the dragon, two of the bandits ran out and just stood there commenting how they couldn’t believe it (Like townspeople will do if you kill dragon near a town).

I stood right in front of them as they just stood there and then blasted them with Lightning.

One annoying thing is your companion just wont shut up. I was sitting at the council and in the midst of Ulfric and Tallius arguing, Mjoll kept saying the stupidest stuff.

Yes, the Greybeards are impressive and you’ve always wanted to see them but we’re discussing the future of Skyrim. MUST you comment about them now?

Anyway, My first playthrough was with an in-tune with nature archer/hunter. He wanted nothing to do with politics so stayed clear of the Imperials and Stormcloaks.

The combat was easy with the archer. I had trouble with a bandit leader in the beginning due to the tight quarters and lack of a companion but after that, I only died due to my own negligence.

I even defeated a giant alone with only a hunting bow using a cheap tactic I discovered. If you find some sort of uneven terrain, you can stand on it and snipe the giants. They’ll run up to the rock but can’t climb on top of it.

So now I started my second playthrough. My new character is going to be a thief, assassin and just your standard up to no good lowlife. This will give me a chance to go through the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quests that my other character was “too good” for. I’ll also join the Stormcloaks to get revenge on the Imperials for trying to execute me in the start of the game.

Also, I will destroy all the Thalmor I come across. I actually saw a few on my way to Riverwood but they were just too strong for my level 2 character.
Right now, the life of a thief is hard. I’ve had to bribe a guard once and ran up a bounty high enough to get me arrested in White Run. Hopefully I’l get good enough to be accepted into the Thieves Guild.

Yeah Lydia makes for a horrible companion if you even remotely rely on sneaking. I had to send her back home after she kept rushing in while I was crouched and carefully sneaking into a good bow sniping position

I noticed that her Wiki page mentions how much she talks, and that leaving her out of meetings and such is a good idea.

Yeah, the melee-centric companions are often like that. I switched to J’zargo the Khajiit mage on my 40ish Khajiit stealth specialist and let him hang back and zap things with lightning. He has aggroed a few guys at a distance, who then run up to get him, pass by me and get stealth-stabbed.

I found Frost again! I’d jumped on another horse I though was Frost, which apparently freezes Frost wherever she really is. Thought I’d lost her for good, but she showed up outside of Riften so she must have walked back from the wilderness.

Gave my new follower a bow and sword enchanted with Soul Trap, so hopefully I won’t have to cast that spell during battle anymore.

Also took the “cast two atronarchs at once” perk, which allows me to lead my small squad of three followers while riding astride Frost. Now I don’t have to dismount everytime I get jumped by a bear or sabre cat. I just circle back behind my companions and let them take care of it. That’s probably the biggest benefit.

The technique of casting soul trap on a dead body over and over was really helpful to quickly raise my Conjuration to 100 needed to get the perk.

I lost Frost on the hilltop finishing the Mehrunes’ Razor quest. It was crowded up there on that little ledge and I thought she had just run away to a safe distance, but once the fighting was done I couldn’t find her anywhere nearby and fast traveling didn’t turn her up and I’d already done a menu-save and walked in and out of the Shrine so I had no recent save point to restore to when I knew she was safe. I never found her body either, so I’m hoping that we are somehow reunited one day if she didn’t run off that cliff and kill herself. I’m 85% sure she didn’t take too much damage in the fighting before she ran off.

Yeah, it’s silly to get attached to a computerized horse, but I kept hoping every palimino I saw was Frost, so I’d walk up to see if it said “ride horse” or “ride Frost.” I’d given up and was riding regular horses that liked to walk off if we were close to a town, instead of either staying put or joining the fight. I was pretty stoked when she showed up again.

In Fallout: New Vagas, I left Rex, the cyborg dog, on the west bank of the Colorado while I swam across to clear out the Deathclaw camp. I didn’t know if he’d wait for me to return, but when I swam back after a tough fight there he was. Who’s a good boy?

I can’t wait to get a real dog this summer.

I finally sat down and organized a few more of my screenshots. I made a small gallery of my dragon encounters.

I’m really itching to play this weekend. My kids weren’t very cooperative trying to get them to bed this week. I like having my daughter play with me, we pick a lot of flowers and she always asks where Lydia is and if she’s at home resting. The bad part is that her younger sister wants to join, then they start fighting for room, then want to get down, then want back up, then one cries. By the time I’m starting to get some solid play time, it’s already late or my 8 month old is ready to eat…again.

That’s parenthood I guess.

Speaking of screenshots, here, thread, have a bunch of awesome Skyrim ones. Well, the site has a bunch of awesome shots of many games, but Skyrim being naturally photogenic makes his Skyrim ones among some of the best he’s done IMO.

I got out of a dungeon to find my horse lying dead outside the entrance. There were 3 arrows in his inventory. Did some bastard bandits kill him while I was in the dungeon? I figured the outside world was frozen while I was in a dungeon. I wasn’t in combat when I went in.

Frustrating but realistic though. If only I could track down the damn horse killers.

I find the horses to be absolutely worthless. Like you, I have had them die while I was in a dungeon, I’ve also had them just wander off and never come back, plus when I am on horseback and am attacked, I have to slooowly dismount, pull out my weapon and engage. It’s my only real problem with the game, they should have left the horses out if they couldn’t fix them from Oblivion.
