The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I usually just wing it, as far as race goes…whatever looks cool. Like I said, I haven’t played one of these games since Dagger Falls, so it’s been a long time. If it’s not to much to level up, I was thinking archer/stealth for my general character, with some sort of magic and one handed weapon like I’ve seen in some of the demo videos. I’m more of a ranged character, usually (in Fallout I do stealth and small guns, and generally play as a sniper type character). I don’t know if repair is going to be a skill or not, but if so I’ll try and level that up as well.

As far as the quests verse just wandering about, what I like to do is just start off by wandering around. When I’ve found a lot of stuff then I might go back and see what quests are available, but quests are sometimes a pain in the ass. I’m not seeing what good they will be here, anyway, since it seems that leveling is more a matter of gaining skills. I am envisioning something like the old UO game, where you didn’t really have levels, per se, just skills in different things. I assume there is some sort of fixed skill cap, so you can’t level up every skill in the game.

Hm…it must have been a smaller download than I thought. It’s already done and ready to install as soon as they open it up (presumably Thursday at midnight).

-XT

Apparently it’s heavily compressed, takes only 6 gigabytes.

Well, it came down really easily. I guess I was expecting this huge rush and for it to take hours (a lot more than the 1-2 it actually took) to download. Ah well…how I just have to wait until they turn us loose now.

I suspect that a lot of people haven’t realized the preload was up, or deliberately waited until off hours to avoid any rush. My guess is that downloading it a few hours before it goes live will be a lot slower.

Hmmm. I’m still not sure what character to start with. I may default to a Nord, but I also like Argonians, Dunmer, and Altmer. The first character I used to play the shit out of Morrowind was a high elf. It might depend on just how important stats like maximum magicka are. Skill-wise, I’ll probably see if it’s practical to sneak in heavy armor; open combat with a bow shot, then switch to sword and board, backed up by alchemy.

My main characters in Morrowind were Imperial and Dunmer. In Oblivion, I played a Breton and a Bosmer. I prefer stealth and ranged attacks over open melee. My MO with my Breton was paralyze with my Mage’s staff, summon monster, and fling fireballs from far away. I might try an Altmer or Argonian this time.

I traditionally play TES games the first time through with a primarily fighter character with lockpicking and healing magic tossed in, but this time I’m thinking of going straight magic.

Argonians and Khajiit are cool, and I enjoy such wild races being in the game, but I always prefer to be a humanoid character, mainly because I’m human (I suspect an Argonian might play as a beast race though, I know my Khajiits (cats) will want to be themselves for sure). Since it’s Skyrim, I’ll make sure my first 3 or 4 characters are Nords (out of respect), then I might try playing as a Dunmer, Bosmer or even an Imperial…Whaaaat? Someone has to represent the Empire and keep these savage Nords under control!

(see how boring that was without smilies, you can’t even tell where the inflection is hardly…bandit)

A review of Skyrim: Wot I Think - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Rock Paper Shotgun

TL;DR: The game is huge. There are some quibbles here and there but nothing too dramatic. Overall the reviewer loves it and thinks it surpasses Morrowind in quality (definitely surpasses Oblivion).

ETA: Metacritic has a professional score of 96 out of 100 from five reviews: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for PC Reviews - Metacritic

One of the great things about Morrowind and Oblivion is the tolls the developers made public, so that the game can be modded. Mods add tons of replay value.

Is that possible with Skyrim if I get it off Steam?

Yep.

It’ll be awhile for mods to hit their stride but frankly the game sounds so freaking huge and will take so long you probably will still be playing the main quest by the time they come out in a big way.

IIRC Oblivion had an issue with a few mods if you played off Steam (most worked though) but IIRC they sorted that out and games like Fallout 3 can be modded with no trouble while playing through Steam.

I fully expect Skyrim to be no different as it is a huge lure for players.

Don’t read too much into that, the PR department likes to get out review copies first to places that they know that will give them a good review or who’ve been bought off. It’ll settle down. Still, a good sign.

Although I’ve always found meta critic ratings for bethesda games to be weird, since they tend to hover around the same for all platforms, which is just stupid. If there are any games that demonstrate how good one version is over the other, it’s Bethesda games, and so the fact that they all come out equal suggests that everyone is just copying others, rating games by hype, and/or being bought off.

Looks like there are some serious issues with the PC interface when using mouse and keyboard.

Menus that do not respond to mouse control, where oyu have to use the keyboard. Menus and sub menus and sub-sub menus, basically a UI that is tailored to accommodate the limitations of the gamepad, and non of the advantages of a keyboard.

Or in other words, they lied.

I prefer mouse and keyboard for these types of games, but it looks like I might have to go with the gamepad :frowning:

Just looking at the live stream of console gamers playing the game, one of the most noticeable things is the strange, turret-like/tank-like movement of the camera. I HATE that. I’m hoping the higher FPS will mitigate that somewhat.

Ironies of ironies, since the Pc evrsion runs at 60 FPs, the gamepad controls are tighter and more responsive than the console’s (runnign at 25-30 FPS). That’s right, the PC offers the best gamepad controls!

Where’s my angry smiley when I need one?

There it is.

I’ve been excited about this game since it was announced. I still play Morrowind and Oblivion all time. Unfortunately, I don’t think my old pc will able to handle this game…it can’t even run the original Assassin’s Creed.

Here is a reviewer’s take on it (FWIW):

I have heard good reports on the graphics in the PC version. They claim the engine is a bit dated and it is not the most beautiful game ever but overall reviewers think it still does a nice job and looks good on the PC.

I can lend you one:

That’s “: mad :” with no spaces.

Pre-loaded and ready for bed fairly soon. Willing be sleeping at 10pm so I can get up at 6 to play. I’m such a geek
