The end of the "Preacher" comic: WTF???

Anyone here read the comic “Preacher”? I just finished the 7-part “Alamo” series arc which put an end to the series. I waited until I had all seven parts before reading it (had to wait 7 months!). When I got to the end, I was totally stunned. WHAT THE FUCK WAS ENNIS THINKING?? I guess the hype machine was in full force since I was expecting a knock-down drag-out fight between Jesse and God. That’s not what I got!!

Hopefully, the next issue of Wizard can shed some light on it. I’m going to try and find an Ennis website and maybe THAT will help. I haven’t been this disappointed since the conclusion of the “Spider-clone” saga ("I wasn’t dead. I was in Europe!)

I’m not sure if I should even consider posting to this thread, as I should probably avoid spoilers (just for my peace of mind). I’m reading the series in trades instead of buying the monthly, so I’m waiting even longer than you did, Mr. Blue Sky.

But I don’t expect a throw down between Jesse and the Almighty. I expect the Starr thing to be settled, and Tulip, and Cassidy, but finding God has turned into less of an issue as Jesse matures. I’ve always assumed that the answers Jesse’s looking for are never going to come. Sounds like I’m correct in that assumption.

One of the recurring themes I’ve seen in Preacher is that there are no answers. Jesse has always been a hero, but he never thought it was enough to simply struggle against injustice. Since Genesis, he’s been learning that there doesn’t have to be anything more than his own tendency to do the right and honorable thing.

Eh, barely worth 2 cents, but there it is.

Oooops! I did a little research and it turns out there’s ONE MORE issue left! Sorry if I’ve spoiled in any way. Hopefully, issue 66 will make up for everything.

Please forgive me for laughing, Mr. Blue. That was really funny.

I did the same thing with Sandman–thought they were ending with issue 70, spent a day ranting, then found out there were 5 more to go.

Maybe Jesse will get to bitch-slap God after all?

Mr. Blue Sky?

One more monthly or one more trade?

I hear you, Mr. Blue Sky. I was going to come to the Pit and rant about it but I wasn’t sure if there were any other Preacher fans out there.
Man, it’s a crying shame. How shocked was I when I went in to pick up a new Preacher a little while ago and the guy in the shop says that it’s coming to an end. It’s such an original, well drawn, well written, thought provoking series. I felt like someone had shit in my cornflakes.
Also, the way I have heard it, is that Ennis’ reasoning behind it is that he doesn’t want to do a monthly comic anymore, just specials. Hence the Punisher mini. So hopefully there might be some new Preacher specials as well. And while there is one more comic left, there’s not much left to sort out. It’ll just sort out the last couple of loose ends.
Auntie Pam, there’s one more monthly to go. There’s also another trade to be made out of the Alamo series.

Hitman’s finishing too :frowning:

Jean De Baton! Jean De Baton! JEAN DE BATON-BATON!!

Probably had to be there.

Punisher’s cool though.

I discovered Preacher accidentally – and by that time, there were already six trades available. I’ve only had to wait for one. (No bookstores with comics for miles.)

The only reason I bought the first one was because Joe Lansdale wrote the intro. I figured if Joe liked it, it had to be good. I had no idea how good.

Hope nobody fucks up and tries to make a movie out of it.

AuntiePam: one more issue and that’s all he wrote, so to speak. I got into Preacher after it was too expensive to buy the back issues. I picked up the first four trades and started buying the regular issues. The comic store guy warned that anyone who read this comic would go to hell!! Anyhoo, I’d rather see it end now rather than go on forever. Preacher just isn’t the type of book that could go on for a long time without losing its appeal (does LOBO ring any bells?).

My favorite comic is coming to an end!! I just read the latest issue two nights ago…

**SEMI-SPOILER THINGY COMING UP !!! **

IT’S SORT OF A SPOILER ABOUT THE FINAL ISSUE NOT OUT YET

SO DON’T SCROLL DOWN, THINKING TO YOURSELF, WELL I’VE ALREADY READ THE LATEST ISSUE, SO HE CAN’T TELL ME ANYTHING I DON’T ALREADY KNOW

The dude at my comic shop claims to have laid eyes on the cover artwork for the final issue, and it shows the Saint of Killers riding up to heaven with an army of angels/devils behind him. I suspect that the final smackdown of the Lord himself is yet to be seen.

Also, I doubt that the way the last issue ended is going to hold up…

I realize that I’m replying to this more than a year after the fact, but…

Anyway, there is a movie being developed. You can read a little about it here. The last I heard, Ben Affleck has been cast as Jesse Custer, Cameron Diaz as Tulip. Its being directed by the woman who did Tank Girl, unfortunately.

(For the record, I hated the ending to Preacher)

Since this is the pit, I can feel good saying that I have always despised Garth Ennis as a writer. I didn’t read Preacher after issue #1, but hearing that he ended it poorly is no surprised considering how bad he screwed up Hellblazer when he was writing it. He never could end a story. He just gets tired of them and has them stop.
