That article is so depressing. How did we let the mistake go on for so long?
I hope what they put up is like what they’ve done over at Cabrini. Those are some pretty nice townhouses, even though the area is still a bit rough. So far Chicago has been able to save quite a few bad neighborhoods (I’m thinking Wicker Park) by doing the mixed income thing. Hopefully it keeps working.
That’s the plan, as I understand it.
It’s weird for me to look at this sort of thing with the perfet 20/20 hindsight that comes of being 31 and never knowing a time when they weren’t horrible places. But, back in the day, they really were seen as The Solution to skyrocketing home costs in Chicagoland: well-made, large apartments with actually pretty nice ammenities that were affordable for working class families. Didn’t work out so well.
