The Eternaut (Netflix Series)

So, spinoffing (?) from that thread, this is for The Eternaut a Netflix series made in Argentina based on an 1957 Argentine Comic.

In one of the opening scenes we can see the protagonists playing Truco, so, as promised I’ll try to explain that game.

This going to be hard because I haven’t played since high school (were some of my schoolmates were truly terrifying players and I can’t lie to save my life so I sorta stopped playing in shame).

if there are more than 2 players your opponent is the player in front of you and the other player is in your team, the points scored by your team are added and the team with more points wins.

Truco is played in rounds were each player is given 3 cards, you can score points by having better cards than your opponent, by declaring “Envido” and having it accepted and then comparing the cards in a different way (two cards of the same suit are needed and the value is determined by a series of rules), or by having “Flor” (3 cards of the same suit)
It’s similar to poker in the sense that you have to bluff your opponents but I think a crucial difference is that in Truco you try to convince everyone that you have great cards, whereas in Poker you must maintain a “Poker Face” and let no one know if you have better or worse cards.

I’m four episodes in. There are parts I love and parts that don’t quite work for me. I’m unfamiliar with the source material, so it’s all new to me.

I appreciate that the protagonist(s) are kind of frumpy 50-year old guys, and the girls and women look like normal people, not unbelievably hot babes. The reveal of what the “snow” does was well done, and I like how in the apocalypse, some characters immediately become helpful, some become selfish, and some go full survivalist.

The scene where Juan rescues his ex-wife was fantastic. My blood pressure was spiking when he jumped out the window, struggling to breathe, even though I knew how it would end up.

But I’m a little unsure after episode 4. As someone said in the other thread, it took a weird turn that on the one hand I totally expected, yet it still just kind of came out of nowhere. I also had trouble following the action toward the end of the episode, when everyone looks the same with their masks on. I think I need to watch that one again, I feel like I missed something - they’re going for the tunnel, no they want a vehicle, wait no everyone get in that bus, no forget the bus, get in the tunnel, OK now we’re all in the pickup truck. Between trying to figure out who is who and follow the action on screen while also reading the subtitles, it was a challenge.

But I’m definitely in for the last 2 episodes and hope there’s a season 2 on the way.
