The ethics of making art with a message you disagree with

I think the OP is more akin to making “I love Hitler” t-shirts and bumper stickers saying “6 million dead Jews, sad we missed some.” with a nice “Arbeit macht frei” as a background because you can make a buck selling it at KKK/Aryan Nation rallies.

Unethical.

When I was in college, I presented a persuasive speech for the legalization of marijuana though I didn’t smoke pot at the time, have never smoked pot, and probably will never smoke pot. I don’t necessarily agree with the laws against marijuana but I really don’t care either way, for the most part. I did it as an exercise in crafting a persuasive argument for something that I don’t feel that strongly about either way.

I guess that kind of counts for what the OP is asking. In my case, I feel that my reasons for doing it were justified as a learning experience. I did get a decent grade on it, I don’t remember what it was specifically, but I did well in that class. I did not say one way or the other whether or not I partook in it, but I do think I alluded to amber waves of grain to sound patriotic. I suppose that for that speech, I sounded like a bit of a pot head, but I didn’t before or after that. Plus it was college, so who cares, right?
