It pains me to admit it, but I’m starting to love this show, too. I thought I could just watch a little bit of last night’s episode, and wound up watching the entire thing…and anyone who didn’t cry when the Dad saw his wife’s picture has a heart made of stone. Stone, I say!
I’ve only seen a few episodes of this show, but the other two singled out here are ones I’ve seen: the one with the woman who donated bone marrow, and the one with the kids who lost their parents. What an awesome, awesome thing to do for these people – people who clearly deserve it. I mean, hundreds of people volunteered to help build the Wofford house, and thousands showed up to cheer for them!
Michael gets on my nerves (I hear ya, vunderbob!), Ty’s histrionics can be a bit much, and the “we’ll never get the house done in time!” thing has started to get old already (though how nice to see them done early on last night’s ep…I LOVED their contractor, btw!), but on the whole it’s feel-good TV. Yay, Extreme Makeover!
I thought the episode where “Joe” the old grandpa had been homeless, living on the streets for 30 years and his son found him and the show redid the house and got him all fixed up with a super delux boxing pad of his own.
First episode I ever saw was the one with “Sweet Alice’s” home getting flooded. Not only did they redo her house, they also redid (on a smaller scale) the surrounding neighborhood, the local youth recreation center, and her job-training center. WOOT! Haven’t seen an episode as awesome as that one, though some have come close.
Haven’t seen it recently, but if I’m home and it’s coming on, I’ll usually try to catch it. My wife likes to tease me about it as it’s the only television program I’ll watch semi-regularly these days.
Watched the episode last night with my wife. I knew they were not going to be painting the mohogany white.
Thought the bedroom for the “handy” kid (I thought the same thing about the kitchen) was kind of lame for him (but I am sure Ty loved it). Other then that, another great episode.
Loved, loved, loved the home gym. And the basketball table.
Got a little misty in a few spots, especially when he saw the portrait.
Looks like ABC has a real winner on their hands. I saw were the guttertrash Fox tried to rip off the concept with “Renovate my Family” but it doesn’t look like anyone is buying it. I am sure Satan’s network will give up and rip-off something else.
It was a great episode, only the second one I’ve seen.
It did leave me with one question though. Even with the wife still living, at some point they had to think, “dont we have enough kids”? I mean, 8 kids is a lot, she wasn’t working, and they already had a 3 bedroom house. What were they thinking having 8 kids!?
It’s great that the new home went to a obviously needy family, but the cramped living space I thought they brought on themselves.
They did a house in my town this last summer. In the evening we’d go over and hang out on the barricades.
When they were around, the on-air folks spent a lot of time at the barricades, talking to people about the project, the show, or whatever. They signed stuff, posed for pictures (my 12-year-old daughter got one with, um, the dark-haired guy; Preston?) I’m so happy to report that they really are genuinely nice, non-affected people who seem to love what they do. Even the Producer/Project Manager guy, who’s always, there, spent a lot of time explaining the economics, logistics, etc. I’m sure he’s done it thousands of times, the same stuff over and over, but he was as engaged and excited as if this was his first house.
And each of them, when they had to go back to work/film/whatever, always thanked the crowd for their interest.
Bring a hankie. Swear to God, I feel like running out and hugging a Sears store after watching the show. It’s just a great big ol’ Kumbaya-fest, but in a good way. . .
And Constance is just as totally hot in person as she seems on TV.
