McConch!
Is there a truly national grocery store chain?
Not really. I picked Safeway because even though there are none around here, I figured it was a regional chain that everyone would have heard of. I thought of my stores (Kroger, Publix, Red Lion) but wasn’t sure they had the same name recognition.
No one has mentioned Harris Teeter! It’s my second favorite grocery name, after Piggly Wiggly.
Thudlow Boink is #47. I’ll probably get to this tomorrow.
There’s a Texas-based chain which goes by the name of “H-E-B”. Its full name is “H.E. Butt”, which is far better.
Not really, though Safeway and Kroger cover big chunks of the country (and at least one person in this Feud mentioned Wal-Mart).
I thought Kroger was mostly in the South East
I just checked - I was right
Midwest and Southeast, but that still makes them a lot closer to “national” than most other grocery chains, which operate in a fairly small number of markets. (The basic premise, that there isn’t a national grocery chain in the U.S., unless you count Wal-Mart, is valid.)
Kroger also owns a number of other chains in other parts of the country (such as Ralph’s in California).
With 70 responses to the thread, I thought people might be assuming it was too late to enter, so I added “still open” to the thread title.
Let us know when to mark it “game over,” Rebo.
I’ll get started scoring it, then we’ll close it when I’m almost done.

Geez, I would have done so much better if I’d gone with my first thoughts of Macy’s and Payless!
I had no idea there weren’t any truly national grocery chains, so no need to apologize, Rebo. I grew up with Kroger, which is based in Cincinnati, not far from where I live (founded in Cincinnati by Bernard Henry Kroger in 1883.). Also A&P and Winn-Dixie. What ever happened to them?
Yippee, I broke into the top 20!!! Barely.
Good Feud!! Thanks Ellen and Rebo. And congrats Rebo and Skammer.
Damn, coffee did me in. (That, ahem, being another “there aren’t any” category…)
Damn Florida. No Safeways or Krogers here.
Yeah, coffee didn’t help since Dunkin Donuts is hardly a “coffee shop” other than the part where they do sell coffee. Last place, yuck. Whatever happened to Worm?
