:smack:Oops! I knew Edith and Maude were related but couldn’t remember who came first!

And yet it was…albeit just by using Esther Rolle’s ‘Florida Evans’ character’s name. They changed John Amos’ character’s name and profession, moved them to the projects in Chicago and never mentioned NYC or Maude!

I find several sources that say Happy Days spun off four shows. I could only think of Laverne and Shirley and Joanie Loves Chachi. But according to website TV Acres, there are a buttload:

According to the Wikipedia link above:

Rhoda also inspired the animated Carlton Your Doorman, which was aired as a pilot for a series doomed never to be picked up.

  4. Robin Williams
  5. Buckwheat
  6. USAir
  7. Curly
  8. RC
  9. Hires
  10. MTV

The catch is that most of those characters seem to have appeared on Happy Days in the first place for no other reason than to set up an ostensible spinoff. According to Wikipedia, Out of the Blue premiered before the Happy Days episode featuring the main character even aired! At least the MTM spinoffs all starred central characters from the parent show.

How much?

AFAIK it only came up once - when James got laid off and Florida went back to work - but they I believe Florida was also a former maid.

Still, they changed an awful lot - Maude was never mentioned as her former employer, no mention’s ever made of New York, and James is definitely not named Henry.

Anyone keeping count of the responses?

Gonzomax is #46.

Ellen, your “buttload” has a lot of cartoons and specials - I don’t think those ought to count as spin-offs.

Ok, I’m glad I’m not the only one who answered Barq’s (although I’m the only one who spelled it right). I regretted it as soon as I’d hit the POST button, since it’s only recently been available outside of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast areas.

Recent as in how recent? I drank the stuff in New England 15 years ago.

Same time period in Canada.
