But I think a lot of it just comes from a divide with the SDMB community. For example, I would never in a million years have put All in the Family, because I had no idea there were spinoffs of that. OK, maybe in a million years I would’ve gotten around to watching old TV, but you get the point.

I think it depends how old you are. In my (admittedly faulty) memory, All in the Family was the first show to even have spin-offs! I’m 51.
no, Rebo - Andy Griffith spun Gomer Pyle and Mayberry RFD. There may have been a series earlier than that top spin something off as well.
The first spinoff series is commonly considered to be The Honeymooners, spun off from The Jackie Gleason Show.
Pete and Gladys was a spin off from December Bride . That may be before some of yours time.

That’s probably around the time that it became available outside of this area, since Coca-Cola bought the brand in 1995.
I still consider that to be recent, considering that they’ve been making the stuff for 120 years.
