The first 2007 FA Cup thread

Yep, it all begins this week.

There’s a local derby in these parts: Ipswich Wanderers vs. Woodbridge Town. And yes, I have watched Wanderers before, and I fancy their chances of getting into, oooh, at least the preliminary round. From there, only five more wins to get into the first round proper…

So Englanders (and sheep-worriers :stuck_out_tongue: ), who’s your local team? Mangetout - maybe it’s Gosport Borough? WotNot - fancy your chances against Glossop North End? And as there’s clearly more than One and Only Wanderers, how can you resist Daisy Hill vs. Winterton Rangers? (Thanks to Zeldar for the help with that)
Bonus points for anyone who actually goes to watch one of these matches!

I’m fairly sure that Witney United is the nearest club to myself.

However I intend to support West Allotment Celtic because they have such a cool name. I really fancy their chances at home to a weakened Norton & Stockton Ancients.

I cheer on all of the teams with Yanks aboard. That puts me in for Westham, Blackburn, Watford, Reading, Fulham, Manchester City, and Everton, that I know of in the Prem. I think we’ve got someone at Millwall and Leeds in the Championship, but not sure if there is anyone else. Of those I think I’ll be most inclined to support Reading and Watford to avoid relegation as the most interesting. As for the FA Cup, didn’t Reading go fairly deep last time around?

That’s why I need the “One And Only” to distinguish Bolton from the inferior wanderers ;). Not sure what my footballing timetable will be this year. My wife is due to give birth any time now, so I haven’t bothered with a season ticket this year. Will have to see what I can fit in.

I don’t suppose you stretch to teams captained by big ugly Ontarians?

It looks as though my nearest team is Retford (20 miles). I see they are playing Tadcaster Albion. I wonder if they are sponsored by one of the two breweries in that town ? (that’s if they are still there !) . Another nearby team is Lincoln Morelands.

Still wouldn’t be as good as Jarrow Roofing Boldon vs Billingham Synthonia - builders against fertiliser!

Probably not. Who is the big fugly Ontarian? I thought MLS had cornered the market on Canadians (Del Rosario, Donovan)?

Hint: captained the national team for about five years :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, forgot to say:

Booooo hissssss spoilsport

D’oh…we have a second Ontarian, actually: http://www.itfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/ProfilesDetail/0,,10272~33971,00.html

Whitstable Town is about the nearest to me as far as I can see. Pity they’re playing away.

Results are coming in…although not yet on the FA’s own site!..
Ipswich Wanderers 2 - 2 Woodbridge Town…replay on Tuesday, which I’ll be able to get to, and think I am obliged!

Chez Guevera - West Allotment Celtic also earned a replay with a 1-1 draw.

Rayne Man gets to gloat, with Retford Utd hammering Tadcaster Albion six-nil. (You plumped for the right choice - Lincoln Moorlands lost 5-4.)

And Whitstable Town are through, 1-0.

It so happens I’m going to Retford on Wednesday , I wonder if the celebrations will still be ongoing ! When will the next round fixtures be announced ?

The fixtures are out: Round 2, 2nd September, the Preliminary Round.

Retford face Sheffield FC. Ipswich Wanderers have the incentive of a glamourous trip to Gorleston or Tiptree United. Whitstable are away to Bedfont (I’m sure they’re making this up). Any other Brits want to join the fun before it gets spolit by all the big boys?
In other news, Ipswich Town got off the bottom of the table yesterday in a dreadful nil-nil draw against Hull, only narrowly avoiding making their worst-ever start to a season. Hands up who can guess why I’ve developed this interest in non-league football all of a sudden?

OK, Town’s run of form distracted me from the reality of non-league competition…but here’s an update, with the First Round Qualifying coming up this weekend:

Boulter’s Canary - Whitstable are still in it, taking on Croydon Athletic at home

Rayne Man - you now get to support the big boys in a derby (of sorts), Lincoln United vs Stamford

One and Only Wanderers - not sure if you made the right choice, given that Winterton Rangers are still going strong

As for me, it seems my local interest is now Needham Market or Leiston. Ewwww. I feel dirty.

It’ll be Hitchin Town for me until the boys from the borough (Stevenage) start appearing on the fixtures list.

Bloody hell, we’re talking sleeping giants of the football world here.

I expect Chelsea/The Arse/Manure/Liverpool are fair pooing themselves

I’ll take Farnborough Town once they’re in and Oldham Athletic once they make the usual brief appearance before the third round.
