How about this, as a compromise, meeting him exactly half way. Congress agrees to match Mexico’s contribution to the wall dollar for dollar up to $2.85 billion. If Trump can get Mexico to pay for half the wall we’ll pony up the other half. Note that this has to be a payment from Mexico directly into the US government coffers, none of this saying that thanks to his “not-NAFTA” trade agreement Mexicans are buying $5 billion of American stuff and that is paying for the wall, or that we collected $5 billion in tariffs from Americans buying stuff from Mexico.
I’m sure if he’s as great a negotiator as he said in the campaign he can make it happen.
I like that. And since, if the wall actually works to suppress immigration, Mexico should like it, since AIUI most of the immigrants now are Central Americans, and if they know they can’t get across to the US, they aren’t likely to cross into Mexico. Win-win!
