The Fried Fish Sandwich of Your Dreams

Best fish sandwich I’ve had was from a Turkish restaurant down in Florida. Don’t remember what kind of fish it was, but there was tomato, lettuce, onions, not mayo but some kind of tart white sauce, reminiscent of the sauce your get with gyros. Absolutely fresh and delicious. Alas, that restaurant closed. I still miss those fish sandwiches when I am down there.

Hmm, maybe I misunderstand the concept of Fried Fish Sandwich …

'cause I now want 4 (or maybe 5 if the bread is big enough) fried fish fingers (crumbed Atlantic cod or Hoki) on buttered white bread with Heinz (or Watties) tomato sauce, served with a side of baked beans.

If I want healthy, I’ll use multi-grain bread.

This is correct, in every way. Including brands.

Maybe add oven chips.

Wait…you put ketchup on a fish sandwich?

Sub n’ Pub had the best grouper sandwiches in Ft Myers up until they sold out to a new owner last year and subsequently closed for good this year. (I guess everyone else agreed.) A foot long blackened grouper sandwich with cheese and onions was perfected with a line of sriracha from their condiment station. Have never had a fish sandwich anywhere close to as good as theirs before or after.

Although there are some tartare sauce heathens around.

I’ve tried the one at Culver’s a few times and was not impressed. The fish was way too greasy for my taste, then they added greasy cheddar cheese. The bread was soaked through with oil both times I tried it at 2 different Culver’s locations.

We have a local chain in the Rockford area, Beef A Roo, that makes a great fish sandwich. I believe they use cod, with just the right amount of tartar sauce.

I also love a good fried fish taco, with mahi mahi or grouper if I have the choice.

There’s your problem. You need to go to a fish ‘n’ chips place (not Long John Silver’s) for a proper fried fish sandwich.

If you’re ever up around DC, do yourself a favor and visit Eamonn’s.

well it sure wasn’t the the dry chewy flavorless sorry ass thing that was brought home from MCD’s… the cheese (which usually cures everything) didn’t help it

When I was in high school, we always had fish sandwiches in the cafeteria for lunch. They were the square Filet-O-Fish style, deep fried. For a nominal fee, one could get an extra fishy square and make it a double. Squirt on a load of tartar sauce and all was good. No, all was great! Thanks, Catholics!

Fried catfish sub from the Northeast Market in Baltimore. Fresh fish battered and fried while you wait, lettuce, tomato, onion on a sub roll with mayo. Packets of hot sauce, Old Bay chips and a DR Pepper. So hard to go back to work after one of those! Food Nap incoming.

Back in post #30, I neglected to mention the fish sandwiches were always served on Friday, hence the thanks to Catholics.
