Ok I just found this show on hulu. It’s basically a nerd version of top gear, with “challenges” and whatnot. I’m just curious since I haven’t heard of this show before, is it super unpopular? Just under the radar? Considering I live in the US and don’t have BBC access (and I’m just assuming this show is British) I do enjoy it after watching two episodes.
Was thinking this is maybe a Cafe Society thread, but I was more concerned with the fact that I’d never heard of it, as I love Top Gear and general tech stuff (even though I’m not a “gadget guy”).
I’d link to the show, but it’s easily found on hulu even though I only found it because of the “recently added” tab and took a chance.
Your first instinct was right, Sin Serially – since this is about a TV show, it belongs in Cafe Society. I’ll pull out my superduper all-purpose mod gadget and move it thither.
You’re correct, it is British, but it’s originally a Channel Five production if I remember rightly. It’s sort of partially popular over here; nowhere near Top Gear, though. I’d say the most recognised thing about it is they have a series-long competition in which the first prize is pretty much every kind of gadget you can think of.
It still is a Channel Five show (or “Five” as they are styling themseleves at the mo). Must be one of their most popular shows. And I’d agree with the OP that there is a distinct Top Gear-ness about it. It’s not as clever as TG, though. Still, not a bad show at all, and absolute gold by Five’s standards.
To be honest, though, saying it’s one of Five’s most popular shows, isn’t saying much. And the presenters are intensely irrating; probably suitably so, since they take geekiness to an extreme. There’s a place on television for a good gadget show - but this isn’t it.
Actually, it seems that it’s more of a top 20 show than the channel’s most popular. It gets maybe 1.5 million viewers. Which the other networks wouldn’t sniff at.
