The Games People Play - First MMP of 2008!

(((MBG)))

We love you. But not everyone checks in every day consistently all the time. I don’t get worried unless someone’s AWOL for a couple of days, usually.

Pie, go to the Dopefest. Dopefests are awesome and fun. And geeky, usually.

Re: induction. The placenta sort of has a best-before date, past 42 weeks it starts being less efficient as a supply system for the baby. And past a certain point your amniotic fluid starts going away. And there’s also more danger, the longer you go, that the kid willl have his first bowel movement inside and contaminate everyhing. So here in Toronto, and maybe Ontario, it’s standard to induce at ten days past due date.

We’re booking an induction for next Friday, and I’m hoping the kid decides to come out on his own before that. I’ve got to get an ultrasound on Tuesday, too, to check the placenta and level of amniotic fluid and everything.

kai, I’ve heard of the seaweed thing, but not from any Canadian medical people (from a Diana Gabaldon novel  ) and there is a prostglandin gel which can be applied- I’ll probably talk to Primary Midwife about it tomorrow or Saturday, depending on how things go.

I really want to avoid pitocin and having to spend my whole labour in hospital, if I can.
And I am not checking in every two hours all night. Pthibbit.

Okay folks, seeing as how I am doing the MMP for the 14th of January, I will explain a 99 party to you. I have most of it written anyway.

Well, I had a very shocking and pissed off moment in the parking lot at Safeway this evening. I was unloading my groceries from the cart into the back of my Expedition. I had bent down to pull a case of bottled water out the bottom part of the cart and some asshole backed right into me and knocked me down. The f’tard didn’t even stop to see if I was okay; just took off. Fortunately, another lady witnessed it and got the license plate number. I was too busy being shocked, pissed and WET, to see it. I couldn’t even tell you the make of the vehicle, just a small SUV is all I remember. I’m okay, just extremely pissed off. What if I had been some little kid?! Stupid idiot!

My husband thinks I should call the cops. What am I going to tell them? Some idiot knocked me down in the parking lot with his vehicle, but I can’t remember the make and model. I have the license plate number. I’m okay, so I don’t see that it’s worth pursuing.

Li-Li, you have to have the baby on the 12th at the time I picked. I have said it must be so.

I guess I should figure out what I’m making for dinner. Hugs to all.

Hi all!

No LiLi post? I’m disappointed. I’m past my prediction… oh, well!

We had some awesome stew for dindin. I simmered the beef on Sunday, and finished it tonight. Very tasty! It seems this week has been all comfort foods - Fried chicken, chili, beef stew, steak hash. And tomorrow shall be chicken & rice casserole!

I had an odd thing happen. We just switched over to new insurance coverage, and are “financially” encouraged to use mail order prescription service. But of course, I procrastinated too long, and had to order some local prescriptions, too. I go to pick them up, and there’s one I don’t recognize, for thyroid! WTF, I ask myself, and asked the clerk - but she said the doctor called it in. I called the dr’s office, but they were closed. So I decide I will wait until they open and ask about the new med, since I had not been informed about it. It’s a good thing! Walgreen’s just called and told me not to take the thyroid med, it was a mistake! Grrr. So I will take it back for a refund. WTF? They just give out random prescriptions to the wrong people? She said I was smart for not taking it. Thanks, I guess…

Going to see if there’s an Earl thread.

Bye!

If you have the name and address of the lady that witnessed it and wrote down the license #, YES.

The lady offered to give me her phone number, but I didn’t take it. Really, I’m okay. I’m just pissed that it happened. If I had been hurt, it would have been a whole different story, trust me.

We had a tornado touch down in Vancouver, WA. That’s about 190 miles south of me. It knocked down wires, flipped a semi on it’s side and ripped down tree branches. We don’t really see those too often in this part of the country.

I need to check on chop-chop.

Home from rehearsal and very tired. We gave our chapter president a surprise baby shower (the surprise was, she isn’t pregnant. HA!) Actually, she still has 6 weeks to go and the baby is already 5 lbs 4 ozs. Is it true babies can gain as much as a pound a week in the last month or so? wow! another chorus member is in her 5th month. She’s going to be tougher to surprise, since she’s the one who planned tonight’s, and she’ll be suspicious if we try to do it during rehearsal. But we have some time yet.

Now, as for Li-Li and her “finger exercises”. . . ew. But do what ever it takes to have the baby safely and quickly. Here is an update of the pool:

You’ll notice I am not discounting rigs yet. Li-Li’s last post was two hours ago - anything could have happened since then, including nothing. No, Li-Li, you don’t have to wake up every two hours to post, but we are going to wait with baited breath until we do hear from you. Because we can, dammit.

I’m back from my first Fair Isle class. It was actually fun! I’m probably a more advanced knitter than I think I am. I consider myself a rank beginner, but apparently not. My swatch is a lovely **navy **and orange. I picked those colors because they were high contrast. The class project is a child’s sweater. The pattern is black with green, blue, red, and white. Tis hideous. I chose a reddish-purple as my main color, with rose, teal, cream, sky blue, and dark beige. Considering I had 5 minutes to pick my colors before class, I think I did all right. The [del]idiot[/del] person who sold me the class wouldn’t give me the materials list beforehand. Luckily, I already have everything but the yarn anyway.

However, the noisy beginning knitting class across the room gave my a migraine. Thank goodness for Maxalt. I guess I don’t have to worry about insomnia tonight!

home from the game, Canes lost. Can’t wait for Firday for once.

Taters, glad you’re OK. I would have called the police, it’s not nice to ram a Mumper.

CutiePie, go to the Dopefest, they rock.

rosie, yay windows! Boo no second picks.

Where do you go for your knitting classes, Shadow? My LYS doesn’t offer many classes, alas; I signed up as interested in a sock class a couple months ago, and there was only one other name on the list. :frowning: But then I found the book Getting Started Knitting Socks by Ann Budd, and the book is absolutely brilliant – step-by-step instructions with clear photos, and basic sock directions for 4-8 st per inch in two kids’ and three adult sizes, with directions on how to custom fit them. And then a whole bunch of pattern variations. It’s really calmed all my sock fears.

Anyway, it would be nice to have some classes, but my LYS seems to only offer one-on-one help, and I’m about 20 years too young to sit around the table with the rest of the ladies there. :frowning: So I just try stuff myself. I tried a little Fair Isle many years ago and didn’t make a total mess of it, but learning how to do it properly would be nice. But by being self-taught, I know I’m missing out on a LOT of the important little details. You can only get so much from books. Although my Nancie Wisemen Knitter’s Book of Finishing Techniques is an awesome resource!

Anyway, enough about knitting.

You really should report that car, Taters! That’s called hit-and-run, and it’s totally wrong! But there was a tornado in Vancouver, WA? That’s where my MIL and three of my SILs live! I’m sure they’re all okay or we would have heard, but that’s still scary!

I’m convinced that one reason so many of us were born 10-20 days late was that back in the ooold days, they didn’t calculate date of conception accurately, just went from your last period. Which leaves a three- to four-week window of opportunity. There weren’t ultrasounds and such to measure more accurately, either, and I just don’t remember induction as being an option except in cases of dire necessity. So even though snowbunny was technically 2 weeks late, I’m still convinced she was actually born right on time because I could pinpoint the date of conception, even though my doctor ignored me (which they did a lot in those days – they’d pat your hand condescendingly and do whatever the hell they were planning to do anyway; most aggravating!) and insisted on using his date. With Young Tiger, they were able to get a lot closer; he was actually born only one day after his due date. Marking the only time he’s been even close to on time in his life.

Yay for windows in the new office, Rosie! Is there any chance you’ll be sitting near one, or is that a privilege reserved for Higher Ups?

I hope your employee and her hubby have some good ideas for you, Pie. It sounds like you’re trying your best to get the business in better shape; I hope it works out for you.

Back to work. Envy me my exciting life.

MamaTigs, this is my LYS. It has a reputation for being rather snooty, and they don’t exactly have the best yarn selection, but they do offer a lot of (expensive) classes, and they are on my way home. They have a huge classroom space and a separate social knitting area, complete with fireplace! We have many yarn stores in the area, so they all have to be quite competitive, which is good for the knitters and crocheters. However, since it is Silicon Valley, most of the stores stock the high end, expensive stuff. OTOH, that means there’s lots of cashmere to fondle.

I’ve heard wonderful things about the Ann Budd book, but I’m still digging my way out of Cat Bordhi’s New Pathways for Sock Knitters. I took a finishing class last year with Nancie Wiseman at Stitches, and I could kick myself for not getting her to sign my copy of her book. If you ever get a chance to take a class with Nancie, do! She’s an excellent teacher. I don’t know if she travels to the East Coast anymore, though. I’m taking Fiona Ellis’s CSI: Cables class at Stitches this year, and I’m really looking forward to it. (Stitches is just a little over a month away! Wee!)

Dopefests are fun!

Taters, I’m just glad you’re okay. People can be such asses. I was hit by a car about a year ago but was lucky enough to just have the wind knocked out of me - the guy who ran into me was actually a decent man and fussed over me so much that I felt embarassed.

Back from friend’s boyfriend’s gig. Rock music really isn’t my thing, but the music was decent enough.

I’m having trouble getting the website to load completely, Shadow, but I’ll try again later. You’re lucky you have competition in LYSs; around here, they’re widely scattered. There’s a wonderful one up on Capitol Hill, only a few blocks from the Metro, and in fact, the daughter of a former coworker is now doing hand-dyed yarn sold through that shop and a few others; but it’s nearly an hour to get there from here, unlike when I used to live near the Metro. Here I’m half an hour beyond the end of the line. And there’s a nice one near where FCM lives, but that’s even farther away. And the others I know of are scattered even beyond that. There’s probably some towards Baltimore, but again, that’s a lot of travel time.

So I just go to my local shop and drool. They cater to lots of older, well-off women who can afford to spend ridiculous amounts on yarn; their prices are high even for the stock they have. I get things there occasionally, but often they don’t have what I want. They don’t even consistently have a good stock of needles of various lengths, for example – the last two times I’ve gone in wanting bamboo needles of a certain size, they were out. Which is aggravating, to say the least. That’s one reason I do most of my yarn shopping on line these days.

Cables should be fun. That’s the one area where I really do have a lot of experience; I’ve been knitting them for many years now. I love them – the way they flow off your needles. Unlike almost every other kind of knitting, I find that cables are the most intuitive – you can see where you’re going to be going and how to get there with every row. Fun stuff!

I haven’t tried New Pathways for Sock Knitters yet; I figured I should start with a true beginner’s how-to since I’ve been afraid of socks for so many years. And Getting Started really does idiot-proof the whole process. It’s a real godsend for those of us who don’t have a nice LYS with a big classroom space!

ETA: Phooey, Stitches East isn’t until November! I’ll have to see where it’s being held this year; hopefully I can get to it!

The Doctors thought I was two weeks late. I was actually two weeks early. That means I probably should have been born around the first of February instead of the 22nd of January (yes, that was a notification).

Just got back from picking up Complicated Roommate from the airport. Tired. Going to cancel doctor’s appointment tomorrow because I plan to sleep through it. I enjoyed the trip back because I got to rub my nice relaxing vacation in Complicated Roommate’s face as he told me about his stressful, bitch-filled three weeks. HA.HA.HA.

I was supposedly a month late and a big baby to boot. I was 9 lbs, 9 ozs. My middle sister was supposedly a month late and just over 10 pounds. My mother was this tiny, 85 pound lady. Yeeeoowch!

Thanks for the well wishes folks, but I just am not going to call it in. I realize it’s hit and run, but I know there won’t be anything they can do about it. The important thing is that I’m okay.

I should turn in soon. Whatever crud I have is still kicking my ass and it doesn’t take much to just plain wear me out.

Nighty-night.

Gahhhhh! I had a nice, long post all typed up and was just about to submit, when IE spacked and shut down, taking my post with it!

I am off to sulk and recompose my thoughts!

I was a week late, and weighed a massive 4lbs. My mum says I’ve been making up for it ever since!

I am so glad it’s Firday today - I have to leave work early and take Shadow to the vets this evening (nothing major, they just want to see that his stitches are ok and the area’s not infected) then I have to whizz off to the airport for the last flight of the evening to Budapest. Then there will be drinking. Lots of drinking. In fact, I think I’ll be having all that ginLiLi has so far turned down. Oh well, that’s the nature of hen parties, no?

The lads are having Brian’s stag do in the same city but we’re not planning to meet up with them at all, they’re slumming it in a hostel somewhere and we’re booked into a swanky hotel. We girls know how to party.

::yawning::

Since we switched rooms, something is not quite right with my bed. It’s crooked and it’s like I’m sleeping on a slope. I’m not sure if that’s exactly the reason, but anyways, I can’t seem to sleep very long without waking up with a sore back at a very unreasonable hour.

I really would like to go to the Dopefest, guys. It’s just a matter of finding someone local to go with me. Because if I go pick up TVMan it’s an hour from my house to his and then an hour and a half to the Fest. But if I take a local friend, it’s still an hour’s drive from here to there. I’ll have to see who the lucky candidates might be.

Good morning! Still no tnc, I take it.

Select your friend now, Pie, and go to the Dopefest. Always fun.

That’s awful, Taters. Glad you’re OK.

Fell asleep around 8:30, woke up for a bit around 11, then woke up again shortly after 5.

All this talk of yarn is making me want to knit. I couldn’t even think where there’s a LYS, but I just looked them up and there’s one just blocks away that I’d forgotten about. I just missed a beginning knitters class. I really don’t need another hobby right now…but…

I should get ready for work…

GT

When I walked into my shop this morning. This was waiting for me.

His right hand is molded to hold a pole for a sign and he’s sitting on a dolly so I can wheel him outside when I’m open. Very cool!

::crickets::

It’s awfully quiet 'round here today.

Heeeeee. Where’d he come from? Very cool.

Almost ready to toddle off to work…

Happy Firday!!!
