The games people play: What games/sports are you best at?

I’m not that good at sports, but I’ve played my share of video games and I would say that the one game that I completely dominated was the old 80’s arcade game Robotron: 2084. On factory settings, I was able to play that game for as long as I wanted to - if Dad and I were in the mall, I’d get a quarter and play Robotron for a hour or so while he shopped*. I used to roll the game over by getting too many extra men, which sometimes resulted in a lost game. I’ve never been so good at a video game before or since.

So, do we have any champion Scrabble or Monopoly players here? Any wargamers? Any triathalon runners, mountain climbers, or pool players around here? Recount your past tales of glory!

*Yes, I can exhibit some geeky tendencies.

Ducktales for the NES

I got “really good” (as in better than most, but still got my ass handed to me by some) at Half-Life DM. I loved HL DM because when you got the right equipment, everything moved so fast, yet was at the same time managable.

Civilization I was my lifeblood during my troubled middle school days.

The only sport I remember being good at is indoor floor hockey.

Well, I am pretty good at tetherball. Could be because i’m almost 6’1": Height is THE major factor. But with a little practice i could probably “ace”* most people easily.

*my school’s term for winning without letting your opponent touch the ball.

I race sleddogs, we compete in sprint. I might not always have the fastest team, but damn it, we’re tough. I remember a couple of years ago, when I was just starting out I was racing a sprint (I think it was 5 miles, something like that) on the property of one of the club members.
One of his yahoo neighbours had built a friggin fence right over top of the trail (he didn’t want people on his property, but the fence wasn’t even on his land, dolt). Anyway, they had warned us at the beginning that we would have to slow way down (the fence was at the bottom of a very steep hill) and go back up the side of the hill off the trail to get around it.
My team goes blasting down the hill and dammit if those dogs didn’t fly right over that thing. I had to toss the sled over the fence while hanging on to the back of it. It was a six foot fence too.
That was one of my better moments, along with the look on the face of the guy slowly picking his way up the side with his team.
We’ve done more exciting /dangerous things since, but I always like that one, I think that was my first or second race, and we won.

Whitewater boating–kayaking and rafting.

I used to speed skate. (short track) I’d like to get back to that.

I also used to be a bike racer, albeit a very slow one!

Used to be good at soccer (halfback), but I haven’t played in years.

I was the Pennsylvania State Champion in the 1600m Run.

Played (field) hockey for my county and for Ireland (Schoolboys & under 21’s).

Not too sure if that actually qualifies me as ‘good’ though (;)), as when at Uni (in Glasgow) I didn’t make the Scottish Universities team, never mind the British Universities.
So playing at school boys level was definitely a far cry from International standard.
And even international hockey in the UK is weak compared to those damn Aussies!!

Games-wise, Tetris has been a small obsession of mine for perhaps 15 years (my first game boy) and I think I must be up there with the best. Completed level 9(heart) High 5 on gameboy, if that means anything to anyone, & 400+lines before getting bored.

I reckon I would be the best basketball player on the SDMB. I am also pretty darn good at 8 bit Nintendo Tecmo Super Bowl and Dr. Mario.

I take on all comers.

Volleyball and tennis were my sports (played both in high school and in competitive leagues in college and afterwards). I still play tennis pretty regularly, but haven’t been on a volleyball court in a few years.

I’m only good at obscure sports. Even in grade school, I curled and played field hockey (odd for a Midwestern American lad).

Throw me a baseball and I won’t know what to do with it. But toss me a rugby ball or a volleyball… (no, don’t toss me a curling stone!)

Unreal Tournament. Ahhh…

The trick is to play until you can school Xan on Godlike, then turn the speed up in 3 or 4% increments, until you are playing ~150% speed. Then you play Morpheus with Jumpmatch enabled, and 16 bots on novice, at 100% speed. It’s like you are playing Max Payne, and they’re playing Quake III.

Truly, mere words fail to describe the expression on friends’ faces upon witnessing the mid-air killing spree.

I’m damn sure I’m the best American native-born off-spin bowler (that’s a type of bowling in cricket). Of course, there are only about 100 or so registered native-born American cricketers.

I’m a fairly decent five-pin bowler, which comes from throwing three games almost weekly from the time I was six until I turned sixteen. My high game is something like 316, and I’ve broken 300 four or five times.
