The Giant Geek Thread. +5 to hit/+6 damage

Nick: I’ve seen only the first eight episodes of Berserk, and I must say that the animation quality is up there for a TV series, and that the story is pretty good so far. All things considered, though, I prefer Bastard!, as Dark Schneider is probably the baddest of the bad-ass anime heroes (second only, I’d say, to Saito Hajime of Rurouni Kenshin fame).

Ura: In response to your Berserk question, to the best of my knowledge it’s only available in fansub, with no plans of North American release (though I could be wrong on this).

Trion: Yes, isn’t Kenshin the coolest? Also, don’t worry about finding the geek chick of your dreams. I came close once (she liked video games and football), but there are others…

Ura: Yep, I watched Perfect Blue on DVD (but, man, did my PS2 hate playing it! Artifacts and glitches everywhere!), and to be honest it wasn’t as cutting edge as all the critics made it out to be. Maybe it’s because it started off reminding me too much about the idol episode of Cool Devices? (God, that’s some depressing stuff!)

And onto a favorite topic of mine - has anybody noticed the US anime distributor’s plot to suck out all of my money?
Due for release by the end of the year:
SE Lain DVD box set, Slayers DVD box set, Slayers Next DVD box set, Fushigi Yuugi Seiryuu DVD box set, among others…

And, of course, I’m waiting for a Trigun DVD box set, a Kenshin DVD box set (35 VCDs is just a little unwieldy), a Jubei-Chan the Ninja girl DVD box set, among others…

Oh, and of course, Ayashi no Ceres should be out in fansub sooner or later…

Also, did anybody here watch Blue Submarine No. 6? I heard it kicks Titan A.E.'s ass in so many ways it’s not even funny. But at one (two?) episodes per DVD, I think I’ll wait for the price to drop a bit…

sigh Oh well, discuss…

BTW, I fully intend for my 100th post to be in this thread, so keep it alive, okay? Thanks.

Um . . . part of that game’s concept was to invest time in your OWN space program . . . one now wonders how good you ever got at that game.

BTW, a trick I discovered while playing civ2 is that if you save the game, cheat and then load the saved game again, occasionally it’ll let you cheat (load the cheat menu) and it won’t record that you cheated in your game score. Pretty cool for the first minute, then it just gets dull.

Also - play Chieftan level, with the Europe map, don’t randomize resource squares, be France and save before huts. I got a population of 10 million in 2000 BC or so. 256 million before 1800 AD.

In the scenarios that come with the Gold edition, there’s one where I managed a shield production of over 300 - in one city. Pretty cool, except the scen. doesn’t allow for capitalization. Still managed to beat that scen., and it’s got a DAMN cool concept.

Anyone other than me play Age of Empires until 4 in the morning for an entire semester of college (that’s as long as it’s been out, really)? God, I love that game.

This is a terrible day. I’ve realized that, with the standards set above, I can no longer be considered a geek. I gave up gaming years ago.

I hereby reduce my rank to Pathetic Loser, 1st Class.

At work today, someone was half-kneeling on a chair, half-standing while talking to someone, and they were turning the chair back and forth as they were talking, so their leg was blocking the between-desk corridor, then not blocking it, then blocking… so I waited & got the timing down pat & jumped past at the right time, thinking of scylla (no relation to the doper) & charybdis & also various computer games. They apologised for blocking the corridor & when i said, “it’s ok, I do this a lot in computer games, it just makes the day more interesting, more of a challenge”, they just looked at me as though I was mad! SIGH

maybe I am!
Hey, anyone worked out who went to King Edward’s school in Birmingham yet?

hey, most of us pretend to be normal (whatever that is) at work everyday…how much more of a role do you want to play? (mind you, I have it easy - I work in computing, so if you can’t quote all episodes of ST - TOS verbatim, you’re considered weird!)

Don’t worry about me KK. I was just talking about high school. Right now I’m currently married to a wonderful woman who love blasting zombies in the Resident Evil series. I knew she was a true geek when she told me she likes the movie Night of the Comet.

LOL
I love that cheesy movie.
But then I am a geek.
Does anyone know of any good online sources (with pictures) for minitures? I’m especially interested in modern day type figures. I’ve got enough medieval but I can’t find many modern and that seems to be what time period my group is focusing on lately.
Can anyone help?

A catered AD&D game? Now that’s style. You proably have crystal dice and a leather battlemap, too. If I wasn’t two states away and carless, I might take you up on that.

They wouldn’t? The snobs. You can join the Disturbingly Freudian Oni Kenshi Brigade if you want. We have free food, but you have to bring your own giant hammer or huge-ass sword. Or polearm, which would be more traditional, I guess. (we ARE Disturbingly Freudian, after all)

Hey. I’ve been up amost two days here. Slack should be cut for me.
Maybe I should get some sleep before I embarass myself further.

The last two Cowboy BeBop Discs, Key the Metal Idol, Escaflowne, BGC 2040, Blade Runner SE. My poor, poor bank acount. And of course the Lain set comes out AFTER I get the first one. Not to mention all the boxed DVD sets that are already out that I don’t have. Still, too much of a good thing is better than too little.

BTW, EatMan 98 is a fun series at a very good price.

Now, if someone would only put out a Golden Boy DVD, everything would be perfect.

On the other hand, my paycheck finally got here. I don’t suppose it would be wrong to waste a little of it . . .

Really? I was in lights. To be honest, I was so socially inept in HS that I proably wouldn’t have noticed, unless you started throwing underwear at me. In which case, I would proably have wondered, why is she throwing underwear at me? I didn’t do anything to her!

Hmm. Cyberpunk, theatre, high school trauma . . . Now I must have you.

Blew mine on the damn kiwi fruit thread. Will I be forever remeberd as soft, brown, rounded and fuzzy? That’s not the image that the DFOKB wants to project.

Ahem. You besmirch my Civ2 abilities, and then suggest I CHEAT on the CHEFTIAN level? I have commited genocide for lesser insults.

Hey, you still have hope. Do you like anything else on the list? If you just gush about your past gaming acomplishments, I’m sure we can squeeze you in on a technicality.

“An ogre without his horn is nothing.”

Fallout 1 & 2 are probably the best CRPG’s ever released . . . for now.

Anime is one aspect of geekdom that has always sort of passed me by. I don’t know, (Ned Flander’s Voice) I’m geeky, but maybe I could be geekier.

Try http://www.ralpartha.com. They have a ton of medieval, but I am pretty sure they have a wide selection of modern figures as well.

MR

I did not suggest you cheat but that you take creative advantage of the game’s coding design. And my Europe map comment was nothing more than a suggestion as someone who spent many hours perfecting his Civ2 game plan, I assure you. No harm meant:)

As for the genocide, perhaps you should take to conquering the world instead of getting to Alpha Centauri.

please forgive the hi-jack
Iampunha,
HEY! How’s vacation? And school? Good to see you back. Take it easy, struuter

Blade of the Immortal? The one with the guy who had the reverse swastika? (whatever the right name for that thing is)? I loved it.

You know, I’m sure that I’ll get sucked into this thread, being the giant-sized (well ok, just kinda tall) geek that I am. But for now, nyah nyah, can’t catch me…

…damn, just realized I’m posting here now sigh
and FTR: AD&D thieves can be very fun, if you deign to do anything other than hack-and-slash (not that there’s anything wrong with h&s per se, but it gets old after a while).

Hmm… been there before but since you went through the trouble… click.

Cool! They’ve updated the site since I was here last. Not bad, not bad. Still need to add pictures for the Shadowrun figures though. That new Misc catagory looks promising…

Thanks, Maeglin

I agree. City campaigns can be the best places to be a thief. Especially for a good political story or if your character is inclined to be along the lines of an assassin. You really have to have a DM and a party that’s indulgent, though, or you may find yourself just picking the pockets of the dead enemies after the fights. My son’s first character was a little thief and he was fabulous. Dipped rocks in oil of impact and slingshot them at an enemy. It was inspired genius on his part and he never lost a hit point.

Vacation was okay. Actually didn’t last as long as I’d thought it might, which was delightful.

School starts this Monday.

going off to add struuter to his sigline

thanks, sweetie.

Since I see that all the Civ players are here, I’ll ask here instead of opening a new thread.

I’ve been playing CivII for about a month now, and I’d like to know what a good score is. My last score was 2396 and 119%. Granted it was only at warlord level, but I was shocked anyway. However, I continue to get slaughtered at prince level.

What’s the deal? What kind of a score do you need at warlord to succeed at prince?

Oh, and to the “Where were you when I was in high school” crowd, I played cards with you every day in the geek lounge, but you were too busy drooling over the athletic girls to notice me.
