Where does Christopher Nolan come into this? I’m so confused. I liked his Insomnia btw. Quite a bit. I didn’t think it was tedious or boring at all.

I think green is the answer. It’s been done. What motivation is there other than profit? They hope to capitalize on the popularity of the book series by presenting a franchise that is American in feel, language and tone. To sell to those people who aren’t interested in watching the Swedish ones.
Just an aside, but I really doubt that’s the case for the last one. That came at a time when Soderbergh could make anything he really wanted to, and did, after making a ton of money on other projects.

This movie will rock. Naysayers can stay home and sulk while the rest of us go see an awesome movie. It absolutely will bring many new people to the books AND to the Swedish films. Win-Win-Win. The only losers will be the naysayers.
