I think I’m going to be watching the show for the time being. I’m really liking the way that Brad Whitford is just hurling himself into the role. And the ADA is not without her charms. Colin Hanks is sort of distracting, though – not because I think he’s such a dead ringer for his dad, but because he is so similar vocally to McGee from NCIS. And I can see myself getting tired of the flashbacks if they keep using them with abandon.
He is! I hadn’t thought about it, but now you mention it, I can see it in his looks, clothing and mannerisms too. Hell, McGee was even a computer geek who liked to do things by the book and then gradually loosened up. And moustache-bloke is like Tony 20 years down the line if he makes some bad decisions.
I like the over-the-top campiness for what it is. I wouldn’t exactly be watching it on my own, but as a way to get some laughs with my guys, it works. My kiddo doesn’t have the attention span or the appreciation for nuance that most grown-up shows require.
Watched the 2nd episode, “Bait & Switch”, last night. Noticed Lauren Stamile in the opening credits (yes I do read the opening credits, cf. the current thread on that). Wow, I thought, maybe she’ll be a regular! (But then maybe not.:()
Another good episode. Lot’s of fun. Will watch again.
Noticed that Diana-Maria Riva (the Lt.) was credited but did not appear. Wow, 4 people listed in the before-the-title credits and one of them is already out of just the 2nd episode. (BTW: The credits start about 10 minutes in. That is definitely not needed. Cf. the credits thread, again.)
And speaking of referencing other recent threads. For those who wonder about people who notice little errors and such, here’s what I have:
About :17 in, Colin Hanks hands shift big time between the consecutive utterances of the word “drywall”.
About :36. Lauren Stamille manages to take off Colin Hanks tie without actually untying it.
:56. Lauren Stamille has a gun in her right hand when she is knocked down by Colin Hanks, lands on her right side while holding the gun and yet it somehow ends up to her left.
The arrangement of the truckers on the ground wrt the exploded tank and such changes. In particular, a blacktop stretch miraculously appears between one guy and the tank and then disappears.
If you carefully watch at about :55 as Stark is about to shoot the tank, in the very last frame before the tank is shot the color goes all wonky. This is the start of the tank explosion saturating the video. But Stark hasn’t actually shot yet.
I am discounting the usual action tropes (which they mock) like the car landing twice, the tank exploding twice. As well as the obvious stunt doubles.
So wonder away.
I think it’s approach to humour is somewhere between Monk and Sledge Hammer, but not close enough, so is nowhere as good as either.
I wasn’t impressed with the first two episodes, but number three, where Dan had the flu and kept giving it to everyone, made me bust a gut.
The best scene was when Dan held up the watch as evidence and the two homicide detectives were like “How come we haven’t seen that before?” and Dan is covering for himself by getting righteously indignant when suddenly he starts muttering urgently “Container…container!” and throws up.
I had to watch that scene about three times before I could go on and I was laughing my ass off.
After episode three I think I’m going to say I’ve done enough to support the show out of friendship to the person I know working on it.
The first two episodes overplayed Whitford’s stupidity and the last one toned it down but was just boring and obvious. It feels like it should be on USA between episodes of Psych and In Plain Sight.
Don’t you be badmouthin’ Psych now, brother, or we’re gonna have a Thing.
I’m finding that it’s trying a little too hard, but I like Bradley Whitford enough to continue watching for the time being.
This.
It looked kind of dumb. But I was drawn in by the allure of Colin Hanks. I’ve enjoyed the first two episodes. I love the “X time ago” bits and the premise of the silly cop’s dumb police work always managing to uncover real crimes.
Okay, waking up a zombie here. I thought there was a newer thread on The Good Guys, but I haven’t found one, so this is it. I keep watching this show because I really like Bradley Whitford in it, but I am getting really sick of the “18 hours ago” thing every 15 minutes. But mostly, Colin Hanks is just all wrong. He’s not funny, and he’s not engaging. His character is just a throwaway. I keep thinking how much better his role would be with Dan Aykroyd in it instead. He would still be the straight man, but he’d be funny. This show just doesn’t have enough going on in terms of plot and characters, so it really needs all the leads to be strong. I’m not giving up yet, but I wish Colin Hanks were gone.
I like it, including Colin Hanks.
The only thing I don’t like is that his and the DA character’s relationship is circling in the worst way ever written. It’s going nowhere and I don’t care about it, so just let it do something and then remove it from the equation altogether.
That, and the gunshot sound effect during the transitions. Get rid of that too.
Otherwise I find it suitably entertaining.
I’m with you there. My main objection, Whitford’s sleaziness, has levelled down a little too.
What I really like it is that we get to know so much about the villains-of-the-week and they’re so nuanced and always amusing. The show’s more about the bad guys than the Good Guys.
I was caught off guard by it’s being on the fall lineup. I thought it was going to be a midseason/summer replacement show.
It’s my guilty pleasure. Yeah, it’s dumb. And not just deliberately dumb, but dumb dumb. But they are having fun with it, so why not?
Agreed: Jack and Liz are stuck in a loop. Jack needs to embrace the Dan Stark philosophy which will have the desired effect on Liz.
The Perps of the Week are usually great. E.g., Todd Louiso (Dick from High Fidelity). Those two guys from “Georgia”. Etc.
It’s surprising how little Lt. Ruiz appears on the show. I don’t think the writers know what to do with the character.
(Up thread I mentioned that Jenny Wade was Sock’s girlfriend on Reaper. She was really Ben’s.)
I really like this show. The parodies of the cop-buddy motif, the over-the-top situations, the flashbacks, the whole ten yards.
It will be cancelled soon.
Finally got around to watching last week’s episode. Ray Wise! (Speaking of Reaper.)The great guest casting continues. The previews had Wayne Knight, if I am not mistaken. Jake Busey is also going to be on in two weeks. Gary would have been more interesting.
Sam and Diane. Ross and Rachel. Stark and Ruiz.
(Raw Wise was also on this past Sunday’s Mad Men. But in an amazingly small role.)
They had less “20 minutes later” flashbacks this week. It was also a less crude episode, which I found very entertaining. One of my favourites so far.
Meant to post this yesterday, so happy belated birthday to Bradley Whitford (51). I think Dan Stark is supposed to be older than that.
Funny, but I was predisposed to liking it, and when I watched the opening episode it just left me as a big blah. Just nothing all that interesting to it.
Kind of like “V”, but without some of my favorite hot TV women and the need for any Sci-Fi I can find on network TV.

My SO watched a couple episodes with me last night and she really likes it. Yes, it’s predictable at times and you always know the ultimate outcome, but the Rally car route they take to get there is engaging and often well written given the characters personalities. Not well written as in Shakespearean sonnet, but pretty damn decent for mainstream tv.
