Like others, I have no problem with ‘The Government’ being used as a collective noun for the politicians and civil servants who are responsible for the administration of a state (“I think overall the Government is doing a good/bad job”). Likewise, it can refer to a section or department of an entire government for reasons of expediency (“The government is thinking of raising the tax rate on alcohol”). That doesn’t piss me off - but I know what the OP means…
Even worse: don’t tell him of the cartel of people who spend trillions of tax dollars of other’s people money.
The idea that anybody would be personally aggrieved by the terms other people use to refer something as huge, amorphous and impersonal as the government is asinine. But to look on the bright side, if that’s the most pressing thing you have to complain about things must be going really well.
