I have laundered the shirt in question, but I had not laundered another shirt I had bought from the same store. The dye on that shirt does indeed rub off on paper. That is pretty close to a confirmation of the t-shirt theory, I think.
ETA: to clarify, the two shirts are from the same line–the only difference is the color and design on the front.
