The Great Straight Dope SMOKE-OUT Topic

Just checking in. Been kinda swamped at work, so I don’t have much time to post.

You all are doing great!

A word of caution: stay away from bars and alcohol. I went out this past weekend, and was very tempted - I had to leave. I started to crave pretty bad.

Coaches: don’t let this thread sink too far, it’s obvious you guys are the reason we’ve been able to get this far.

I am still smoke-free! Shayna, I’m glad to see you back! I missed you on AIM last night!

Today, I have not smoked for Doobieous! Thank you for being my sponsor.

Thanks again for all the encouragement and support from everyone. I would not have made it this far without you guys.

Cristi–You will get through this. Think about how happy I am right now because I quit. I would never go back to smoking. I wonder why I ever did it in the first place.

evilbeth–I don’t believe you have sponsored me yet. How is next Tuesday for you?

I’m going off 'em tomorrow. Really, I mean it this time. I got my Nicotinell, my jumbo bubblegum pack, and a bunch of friends and coworkers who are seriously tired of hearing me cough up a lung every five minutes.

wish me luck, I’m gonna need it …

Well, I posted two hours ago. Apparently, it didn’t take.

Anyway, I am still smoke-free!

Today, I did not smoke for Doobieous.

This gets easier every day, but the temptation is still there.
evilbeth, I still need a sponsor for next Tuesday. Are you up for it?
Here’s my stats now:

I have been smoke free for: One week, one day, 1 hour, 45 minutes and 17 seconds.
121 cigarettes not smoked,
Money saved: $24.22.
Life saved: 10 hours, 5 minutes.

Congrats Ruadh…
You can do it if I can. And you’ll feel so much better and smell so much better.
This spring has been so much different because I can smell all the flowers. Its pretty magical!

Shayna, jeannie Cristi…now that you guys don’t smell like smoke how bout you come on over and we can fool around??

Delta-9, that’s one of the good things about being in California if you’re trying to quit smoking - it’s not allowed in bars here! Although I guess one could still be tempted to go stand outside with all the losers. But not I. Not after all this. No way, no how!

“Coaches… it’s obvious you guys are the reason we’ve been able to get this far.”

Truer words were never spoken!

Jeannie, I missed you too. I was so annoyed when I couldn’t get connected. Just ask Grace about the expletives I left on her voice mail about it. LOL

ruadh, you’ve got more than luck on your side, you’ve got all us nags and sponsors!!! Come back here every day, you hear me? I’m sure you have friends and co-workers who would gladly let you use them as a reason not to smoke on any given day, but I hope you let your friends here at SD sponsor you, too. I’ll take Day 1, if you don’t have anyone else lined up yet. Download a meter to keep track of your success. It really will inspire you. As Delta said to me when I first started this thread, Welcome to our clique!

Cristi, weirddave, Chief Crunch, beatle, Lissa (who am I missing?) how are you all doing? We need updates!

As much as I’ve been tempted to, today I have not smoked for Rick (and those Godiva truffles ;)). The day’s not nearly over for me, but I’m committed to seeing it through. It’s now been 1 week, 3 days, 17 hours, 27 minutes and 19 seconds. 128 cigarettes not smoked, saving $19.95. Life saved: 10 hours, 40 minutes. Go Me!

Congrats Ruadh…

Okay, I tripped up today.

I have a bad cold. Not only that, I woke up this morning to find that my period did start (I just knew I was PMSing Monday). And guess what else? Yesterday my eyes started to bug me. By the end of the day, they were watery and bloodshot. Got to the doctor today, and I’ve got pink eye. Caught it from my son, who had it last week. I’ll be over it by Chicago! I will!

My three-year-old daughter also has this cold, but not the pink eye, thank the Goddess. She is whiny and miserable. And I decided to try going patch-free today. Why? Because I’m stupid, that’s why. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I was looking for something in the kitchen, and I found a pack of my smokes, with 5 left in it. I couldn’t take it. I snatched one, went out on the back porch, and lit it. It tasted horrible. It was so stale. I took about three short puffs, then crushed it out. Made sure it was unsmokeable. Then I took the others out of the pack, broke them, threw them in the trash, and the next time I changed my son’s diaper, I made sure I threw it right on top of those broken smokes.

I’m sorry I’m whining so much. One good thing, though–my last memory of a cigarette is now a very bad one. Bleah. Those of you who’ve smoked stale cigarettes know exactly what I’m talking about. Gaaaaaack.

I’m sorry for the trip-up, but I think I’ve got myself together now. Aaaaaaaaaaagh. Bad day! Bad! Bad!

Cristi, I’m so sorry that you’re feeling so miserable. Gosh, all that at once would have sent anyone over the edge. Don’t beat yourself up. 3 puffs? That’s all? Hell, that ain’t cheatin’. Especially if it grossed you out enough to confirm your conviction to stop. Keep it up and you’ll do fine. Who’s your sponsor tomorrow?

Christi - you were just reminding yourself why you’re quitting.

Okay, so my first post did work.
My browser is moving so slow today…

Cristi–Hey, three puffs is not that bad. When I messed up, I had three whole cigarettes for two days in a row. That was a slip-up. Don’t beat yourself up. You’ll do fine. And I know what you mean…didn’t it taste nasty? ICK!

Okay, once more today:

I have been smoke free for: One week, one day, 3 hours, 54 minutes and 19 seconds.
122 cigarettes not smoked,
Money saved: $24.49.
Life saved: 10 hours, 10 minutes.

I couldn’t post until now because I had to give a speech at Humber College. Long story, but my wife and daughter thought I did great. Like they know. It was a technical talk about blow moulding technology.

Anyway, I see everybody’s doing great here.** Cristi,** we’re not going to count those three puffs. Keep it up. Remember, if Wally could do it, how hard can it be? Okay, it’s hard. We’ll leave the easy stuff to the wimps.

**Shayna,**you’ve come a long way, babe. You’re going to do this. Guaranteed. Go out and buy yourself something nice. Who loves ya? Wally does. A whole bunch of muches.

Jeannie, you’re awesome. You got right back up and I can tell by the way you’re talking that you will beat this too.

Dave, how’s it going? You haven’t checked in for a while. Hope you’re doing okay.

I see that ruadh and Beeruser are going to jump on the bandwagon. Maybe we should patent this support system.

I’m so happy for you guys.

Thanks, friends. I do feel better now. Except for my headache. It’s an eyestrain headache, though (remember I said I have pink eye? Got it in both eyes). So this will be my last post for tonight.

Yay ruadh & Beeruser! Come join us! We’re having fun! Really we are! :D:D:D

We’re going to have to start another thread soon, don’t you think? This one seems to be getting a bit cumbersome, or maybe it’s just my lame-o Popeil Pocket PC. Maybe if we ask really really nicely we can get this one archived!

Cristi, as was mentioned before, today was just an icky reminder of why you are doing this! You are still doing great! You didn’t have to throw the rest of the pack away–but you did. That took enormous amounts of strength and willpower! I am so proud of you! It is that kind of self-confidence and determination that is going to get you through this!

Jeannie, I am on for next Tuesday! I would be honored! Keep it up!

Shayna, I’ve got you penciled in for this Saturday! You are doing great! Look at how far you’ve come!

(for having such a rough day!)

Wally, good thing you came in when you did (and that I read unread posts before I poted), I was getting ready to ask “Where’s Wally? Updates please.” Seemed kinda strange opening this topic and not seeing your name and all the support you’ve been giving everyone. No more day trips for you bud.

Cristi, don’t beat yourself up over 3 puffs. You recognized the trap and you threw away those really horrible, nasty, rotten cigarettes.

Ruadh, you couldn’t have picked a better time to quit smoking. Whenever you feel like picking up a cigarette come here instead. We’ll give you all the support you need to quit. ::::Group Hug::::

WeirdDave, how are you doing buddy? You still with us? Give as an update please.

Shayna, Jeannie, Delta, Frankie, and everyone else, Congratulations on another smoke free day.

If anyone needs a sponsor just let me know. I’m available! And since sweets seems to be the favorite encouragement tool around here, I’m willing to send Texas pralines to those make it through my day.

Still here. I’m doin OK, but tonight I have a headache. Grace, you can be my sponsor tomorrow. I’ll post more then.

I just wanted to say that I am proud of all of you who are quitting. I am sorry to say that my brother started smoking :frowning: but he has cut down… now he just bums em off people he says thats cutting down  well I hope he quits he’s too young to be smoking. He is only 16. I am going to try and convince him to quit. Maybe I should show him this thread…

Just thought I’d drop in and say “keep up the good fight” to those who need it. I’m sure it’s a struggle, but it’s worth it. And if anyone needs someone to remind them and watch for a day, send me an e-mail (not sure when I can check the board, but e-mail I can do) and let me know - I’ll be sure to pester you whenever possible - before school, study hall, after school, and all throughout the evening.

OK, it’s better than it sounds. So just let me know, and best of luck to you all. Nothing I’ve had personal experience with (and don’t plan to), but I’ve seen my parents quit and the ensuing fight. T’ain’t easy, but it’s worth it!

I’m back! I’m so very sorry that I wasn’t here on my day, Shayna and Jeannie. :frowning: Please forgive me. I am ecstatic that you two didn’t smoke on my watch! I was thinking about you guys all day on Monday. I would’ve posted sooner, but it took me several hours to read all of the posts since I’ve been gone! COOL!! Shayna, yes, I would have been disappointed, but I love you anyway, and am here for you no matter what. You are so awesome for sticking it out! Jeannie, WTG, girlfriend! I knew you would do it!

I was so happy to see my hubby post for me on Monday. Didn’t I tell you what a great guy he is?? I love you, honey!

weirddave, it’s okay that you stumbled, the main thing is you got right back up again! Same for you Christi, I don’t count 3 little puffs at all.
{{{{{{{{weirddave}}}}}}}} {{{{{{{{Christi}}}}}}}}

beatle, that is so awesome that you are going to quit too!! {{{{{{{{{beatle}}}}}}}}}

For beeruser and ruadh: I am so very happy that you’re going to quit too! {{{{{{{{{beeruser&ruadh}}}}}}}}}

Where are the rest of the former smokers at? I hope you all check in soon. Let us know how you’re doing!

If anyone needs a sponsor for a day, I’m available.
