The Great Straight Dope SMOKE-OUT Topic

Jeannie,

It looks like you’ve got sponsors through Saturday. Having already done my part to find you a different target for any oral fixation, I would like … (oh, hush, you guys! I sent her truffles on an unrelated matter! sheesh!) … I would like to volunteer my services as a sponsor for Sunday. I feel I will be especially effective in this role, because I can encourage you on TWO boards.

GODDAMN IT! THIS IS SO HARD! I’m not gonna lie to y’all, I smoked about 1/2 a cig yesterday. It wasn’t even from need, it just felt so good.( upside is smoking with my client helped put us on the same page and I did make a sale.)I am at the point where I am always argueing with myself about how much I enjoy smoking.( Hell, health risks and all, I like it) I am keeping my counter going because it gives me a concrete thing that I don’t want to throw away. I guess I just need y’all to live in my pocket and yell at me all day long.So start yelling!
Three days, 12 hours, 4 minutes and 34 seconds.
70 cigarettes not smoked,
saving $11.38.
Life saved: 5 hours, 50 minutes.

WEIRDDAVE WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU’VE COME SO FAR AND YOU’RE GOING TO GIVE IT UP NOW?!

MAYBE THAT CIGARETTE FELT GOOD, BUT QUITTING WILL FEEL EVEN BETTER! NOT TO COUNT THE FACT THAT YOU WILL LIVE LONGER!

There, is that what you wanted?

Stay strong man! (high-fives weirddave, and jumps up and bumps his chest)

Sooooo Jeannie! Is there something you’d like to tell us?

Dave, don’t give up! Stopping the smoking habit is much harder than picking it up. If it were easy to quit smoking, the smoking industry wouldn’t be a multi-billion dollar business. The best you can do is to try. If you falter, you try again! Everyone here who has quit smoking has tried many, many times before. The good news is that you will reach the point where they are now. {{{{Dave}}}}

THANKS ARNOLD, THAT’S JUST WHAT I WANTED!lol

I’m gamely struggleing on. Thanks y’all.

Three days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 5 seconds.
71 cigarettes not smoked,
saving $11.69.
Life saved: 5 hours, 55 minutes.

subtract 1/2 from the above

Dave, I know it sucks, but YOU’VE GOT TO DO THIS!!!

DO YOU REALIZE HOW YOU STINK? HOW ATTRACTIVE IS THAT? NOT!!! F*CK THE HEALTH RISKS, YOU DON’T WANT WOMEN TO REBUFF YOU BECAUSE KISSING YOU IS LIKE LICKING A DIRTY ASHTRAY. MAN, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?! GIVE IT UP!

Ok, end of yelling.

Wow, Shayna - very impressive. You didn’t give acting tips to Lou Gossett Jr. before An Officer and a Gentleman, by chance?

Okay, I’m Jeannie’s sponsor tomorrow.

It’ll be an easy watch, so I’ll still have time to badger, cojole and threaten the rest of you.

Dave, Cristi and Jeannie both slipped and got right back up again. They’re going to do this. So can you.

Dave, I don’t want to belabour the point, but get this straight:

You do not enjoy smoking. You are a nicotine addict.
When your body craves a fix, you light up and the craving goes away. You’re not smoking to feel good, but to keep from feeling bad.

There’s only one way to break this vicious circle, and you know what it is.

Do it, or I’ll hunt you down and give you such a kick in the ass you’ll think it was Monday.

Who loves ya?

One of the reasons I’ve always had trouble quitting is that I kept seeing all my failures to quit as evidence that I really wanted to smoke. I think I’m having less trouble now because I’m seeing all my attempts to quit as proof that I really don’t. If you really enjoyed smoking you wouldn’t be trying so hard to quit, in fact you wouldn’t even be reading this thread - you’d be off in the Pit with Sentinel telling the rest of us to go to hell.

Next time I’ll yell

smoke free for: 6 days, 19 hours, 38 minutes, 58 seconds
cigs not smoked: 204
money saved: £38.76

Hey Shayna. It’s been a long day and I’m going to sleep now, but I knew that I was sponsoring you today, so I had to check in and make sure you were doing all right. Keep up the good work. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to sleeeeeep…

Let me see…

:Flips through calendar:

Okay, Rick, you can sponsor me Sunday. I was beginning to wonder when you’d notice me sitting here

Grace, I have nothing to tell you  But, I am sharing the truffles with Mr. Jeannie

Dave, I cannot yell at you. I slipped up, too. Hell, I slipped up worse than you and Cristi put together, and I’m still going strong. You can beat this.

Today at work, I had my first desire to smoke in a long time. There’s this guy at work who I positively despise. I can’t even get into it, because it would take all night and twenty threads just to scratch the surface about what it’s been like to work with this guy for the last three months. Today, he outdid himself. I wanted to strangle him with my bare hands and then go smoke a whole pack. Asshole!

But, for Wally, I did not smoke today. And you thought you’d have it easy today, hon.
I have been smoke free for: Two weeks, one day, 18 minutes and 19 seconds.
225 cigarettes not smoked,
Money saved: $45.04.
Life saved: 18 hours, 45 minutes.

Jeannie, I was serious about the pralines. There’s a place in Austin called Lamme’s Candies and I absolutely LOVE their pecan pralines. Email me with your address and I’ll send you some. After you and Mr. Jeannie have polished off the truffles, you can start on these.

Way to go, Jeannie.

You’ll be tested like this from time to time for a while yet, but you proved that you can rise above it.

Damn! That makes me feel good and I don’t even know why. It just does.

I’m not an anti-smoke fascist. When smokers come to the house, I pull out the ashtrays. When they leave, we air out the house. But I’ve always considered it a form of slavery, even when I was smoking. It’s also a proven killer.

And it stinks. Put me in a room full of people, and with no one smoking, I can pick out the smokers. Without fail. Every time. Because they smell of stale smoke.

You will never be sorry that you did this.

Who loves you guys the best?
**Shayna, this is your topic. It’s up to you to open a new thread. This one is top heavy. What do you say?

So did we decide on starting a new thread?

Have a great day everyone!

I’m doin fine, but have no time to chat now. I agree about the new topic.

Four days, 11 hours, 18 minutes and 6 seconds.
89 cigarettes not smoked,
saving $14.53.
Life saved: 7 hours, 25 minutes.

I’m still here. I keep checking this thread, but haven’t posted due to the length. dave, honey, it’s ok.
NO IT’S NOT! WHAT THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING?? AND THE REST OF WHAT SHAYNA SAID TOO!!
Love you guys for doing this! Keep it up! I’ll sponsor anyone who needs it. dave, what day do you want me?
Yes, Mr Bear’s home. I’m tired. No comment.

Well, I’ve hit a milestone - a week now.

My cough is still here, but it’s more a frog-in-the-throat cough now, rather than the run-she’s-got-tuberculosis cough I had last week.

I can now identify smokers by smell. I also now notice the smell on my clothes after I’ve been around smokers.

Upstairs walks are much easier.

I was 15 minutes into my lunch break today before I even thought about cigarettes. I’m a bit drunk at the moment and my flatmate is smoking and I’m really not even tempted.

And I’ve already saved more than the amount of money I spent on a three week supply of patches.

Have a great weekend everybody! I want nothing but good news* from everyone when I’m back Monday.

*Erm, and a new thread. This one really is too long.

smoke free for: 1 week, 21 hours, 44 minutes, 48 seconds
cigs not smoked: 237
money saved: £45.03

Way to go, ruadh.

One more week and you’ll wonder why you smoked at all.

Where’s Shayna, Gristi, Lissa, Delta, Dave, Jeannie?

Did I say something wrong?

I swear, I promise, I will start a new thread no later than first thing in the morning. I really wanted to do a recap to start things off, but I just haven’t had time. I’ll email Euty and Tuba tonight and ask them to coordinate a time to close this one after I post a link to the new one. I’m really sorry it’s gone so long.

I’m tired now. It’s been a long day. Congratulations to EVERYONE who hasn’t smoked today. And thank you Talkinsquirrel for sponsoring me yesterday. You are a wonderful young man and I appreciate you caring so much.

Wally, I’m gonna put you back in the lineup tomorrow. I don’t think about smoking all that much, but now I’m finding that I’m as addicted to my water bottle as I was to the cigarettes. I panicked this morning when I realized I’d left the house without it and had to come back to get it. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Here are my stats as of tonight…

Two weeks, four days, 21 hours, 30 minutes and 4 seconds without 226 cigarettes, saving $35.15. Life saved: 18 hours, 50 minutes.

New topic tomorrow, guys!
