The Grey Havens (Forbidden Lord of the Rings Mafia)

What were you confused about in the HP game, out of curiosity? I’m still kind of annoyed by that one so obviously I haven’t talked about it enough.

I’m annoyed, too. The truth is that Town had a lot of players that played extremely poorly. It wasn’t fair to Town, in my opinion.

I could list all the behind the scenes things that happened in that game, but it would be too long. Basically, Town started off great by killing a couple scum, but it spiraled out of control from there.

We had:

  1. A mason register, read the board, but choose to not reveal themselves to the other mason. Intentionally. Oh, then the mason later quit. Out of nowhere.

  2. Several, and I mean several, players quit for no serious reason. All town.

  3. One player discover the identity of scum, but then hide it until they read the Forbidden Thread. Then, they posted info. gained from the Forbidden Thread(which was speculation of course) and was killed…never revealing the ABSOLUTELY KEY INFO THEY LEARNED.

  4. Minimal conversation. About anything.

  5. Almost no unvotes or critiques.

I could go on. Really, I could.

I mean, the scum didn’t even get their “bonus” player(Snape), who was going to join their team. Didn’t need him. Still won.

It was a really odd game. Scum deserved to win, even though they lost 2 in the beginning.

I would rather say that Town deserved to lose.

I’m still not even sure why the game ended when it did.

Sadly for them, yes, they did.

Most games, it could go either way and a lot of luck plays into it. Town flat out lost that game.

I was out of town when Red called it. Did we mess up? That would be an epic failure if we did.

I was surprised at the ending, too- I had been under the impression that town still outnumber scum by 1. At the time I just assumed that Red was putting the game out of its misery.

Also, I apologize for being dense, but could someone explain to me what a handshake is? I’m around page 5 of the game thread and I have absolutely no idea what on earth they’re talking about.

Basically, it’s an agreement among the players to share their info/roles. For example, they could share their role PM’s and so forth and see if that drives out the scum.

The working assumption is that either the vanilla town players have the same role PM, or the win condition section of the town role PMs is the same. In theory, the players can handshake (confirm they have the same info in their role PM) by revealing a new fact about it (e.g. the message contains 6 y’s).

It almost certainly won’t work as the mods have probably given the scum team the vanilla role PM, or issued individually tailored role PMs.

If they scum do have a sample role PM, they also have motivation for attempting to start a handshake. If players handshake successfully, this may be an indication that they are vanilla, making it easier for the scum to find and eliminate town power roles.

@Omi- Have you read any of the Mafia wiki’s?

@Mahaloth - Could you spoil me in please?

No, I haven’t read any of the wikis-it’s been some time since I did anything mafia-related, really.

No, it was a win for the scum. Their night was 100% guaranteed, which would win it for them. Red just did not wait for the kill, as I would not.

Scum won.

Huh. Aragorn, not Frodo. Which makes Chronos probably either Eowyn or Arwen, probably Eowyn, who after all Aragorn OMG DIDN’T KNOW SHE EXISTED!!!

Guiri just made an excellent point. This:

is exactly the kind of thing that people mean when they say that anti-Town is not the same as pro-Scum. If Ed were scum, the rest of the scum would almost certainly have the information that he has. Therefore Ed’s actions(assuming Astral has correctly described the situation) can only be bad for Town if Ed himself is Town.

Hey guys…thought I’d pop over and follow things from this side.

This was not my first Mafia game, but it’s the first one I’ve played in several years. And maybe my memory is failing me, or maybe the play style have just gotten more sophisticated, but I wasn’t expecting so much of this handshaking, hashing, and meta-gamey stuff.

I suppose I could have read some of the older game threads more carefully, but I just wanted to play the game, not analyze it to death. Oh well, live and learn…

The handshaking stuff is unique to this game. Don’t let it put you off future games.

I’m not put off by it; I just wasn’t expecting it. Well, I guess I do find it a bit off-putting, but not enough to discourage me from participating again. Especially if it’s not necessarily par for the course.

It’s not. Read Harry Potter and you’ll see that it is dismissed rather early, if even discussed.

It’s not usual to have a big discussion about handshaking. I found it really boring and pointless. If the mods have done their job correctly, and they usually do, there is no scope for a handshake to work. The mods will usually either give the scum team a sample role PM, or customise each role PM.

Handshaking is also somewhat against the spirit of the game. It’s an attempt to outwit the mod, rather than the other team. A game where a group of townies managed to handshake successfully would probably need to be abandoned.

And, furthermore, some of these players must remember LOST(only 14 months ago), where I messed up early on and a handshake almost happened. Instead of abandoning the game, I did a “patch” fix on it that was a bit lame, but sufficed to save it. It was humbling, to say the least.

Embarrassment is a great teacher.

Even for peeker that F5 F5 F5 F5 stuff was a jarringly weird way to behave. Does he really think anybody else would have made him a prohibitive favorite to get nightkilled?
