The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

You do know what board you’re on, right?

I think the people who have been shitting on Phase 4 (Dont know if this actually is in P4, doesnt matter) and the MCU in general are just cranky sourpusses. We got:

Wandavision (Wandas whole arc ion the MCU was just dark and very tragic)
Loki
Hawkeye
This
The Halloween show
She-Hulk
What if?

And personally i liked Dr. Strange and the last Spider-Man

Though it really does seem like Thanos cursed everyone. Since Endgame, everyone who fought him havent faired so well.

By the way the cartoon was very Heavy Metal

I had to look to see if Danny Elfman had anything to do with this special. He didn’t. The soundtrack is out on Spotify.

I do hope that the composer contacted Elfman to inform him that he would be doing a LITTLE more then ‘channeling /homaging’ him. That chase sequence straight up does everything but copy part of Scrooged.

Not terrible, but the rough edges of the Guardians don’t really dilute the treacle of its being a “Holiday Special.” But…am I the only one who noticed that when Mantis and Drax were following the map to Kevin Bacon there were exactly six stops before they got to his house? THAT was a nice touch.

It was fun but extremely lightweight, even compared to the GotG films. I enjoyed it but am unlikely to ever rewatch or even much think about this apart from the “sister” thing which will likely crop up later. Tbh much of it felt like an extended EE commercial (EE being the mobile phone network Kevin Bacon shills for on British television); I was half expecting a reference to it when he was talking about phone reception.

Only one pause-and-rewind moment for us - when Drax and Mantis are wandering around in the street on Earth the camera pans by a sign for a show which I didn’t catch the first time. It was for “Kingo’s Christmas”.

We watched it last night. As long time Old 97s fans my wife and I got a kick out of their cameo as the alien band. Murry (the bass player) even kept his glasses on! (I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an alien wearing glasses before…) The woman in the crowd imitating Rhett’s windmill strum then giving a “WTF?” kind of shrug was hilarious.

Oh, and “introducing Kevin Bacon”?

Her: Can you throw me over that wall?

Him: Sure

One scene later she’s jumping over walls herself. LOL

I liked it a lot. Nebula built Rocket a copy of Bucky’s prosthetic arm–very cool.

Favorite line: “You can’t escape me, Bacon!”

Perhaps in the future we can have an Earth character visiting another world be like “wait, you have Christmas on this planet?” as it spreads to other cultures because of the Guardians.

Right. A copy.

What’s the nice touch? I don’t get it.

Stop = degree of separation.

I absolutely did not notice that, and it took me a few moments to even pick up on what cmkeller was saying.

That’s a favorite song of mine, so I was delighted. If they had the Kinks’ “Father Christmas” too, it would have been a double treat.

Ooooo deep cut. I haven’t heard any of the Easter egg shows mention that

But I haven’t heard any of them mention the Danny Elfman like music either

To elaborate on Johnny Bravo’s answer (if that’s necessary), there is some sort of meme called “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”, meaning that anyone in Hollywood can be connected to Kevin Bacon in at most six steps (e.g., Actor A co-starred in movie 1 with B, and B was in movie 2 with C, and C was in movie 3 with Kevin Bacon). I interpreted the six faces that appeared in the scene of Mantis and Drax looking for Kevin Bacon’s house after obtaining the map as six such steps leading them to him.

In reality there’s no way Margot Robbie is six degrees off so no one expend brain power seeing how far they really are

Hell I’M only 3-4 off for doing a local crap ass slasher film that showed once to family and friends.

I did not catch the 6 degrees joke with the maps. Also, Margot Robbie and John Cena were put in the maps because Gunn likes working with them.
