The guilty hand

I’m sure you’ve all seen it before- people giving a deceptive hand wave when they are doing something they are not supposed to. As if to try to trick other drivers into thinking they let the guilty guy go ahead.

You know when you yield for someone else, out of the goodness of your heart and the person kind of gives you a thank-you wave? Kind of looks like a raised hand. Sometimes there’s a slight head bow behind this. I pay attention to the body language of drivers, because when everybody is nice to each other and attentive, it can save lives when good drivers are looking out for each other.

But these folks have corrupted that friendly wave. I call it the ‘guilty hand’. They blow through a stop sign and wave when you have to slam on the brakes to avoid being T-boned. Why are you waving at me you moron? As a crossing guard, I see people do this all the time, particularly when they blow through stop signs, but also from other things, like illegal U-turns (“Maybe if I wave my hand that no U-turn sign will disappear!” ) or making a left turn without yielding to the right-of-way (the other drivers, not surprisingly, wave back with their middle fingers :stuck_out_tongue: )

Maybe this waving is a benign admission of guilt, but I see it so many times I cynically believe there’s nothing innocent about it. They might as well be sticking their tongue out at me and saying ‘neener neener!’ if they think waving their hand is going to justify breaking traffic laws

I’ve done the post-mistake wave a couple of times, usually accompanied by a sheepish expression. It’s not even a conscious act, it’s just a manifestation of feeling apologetic for the bonehead thing I just did.

Luckily, I only do it rarely.

It’s the gambit known as “Plaste’s Placid Salutation” in Stephen Potter’s One-upmanship books … it’s been going on for a while, this has.
