The Guitar that Broke Folk up for auction: Mike Bloomfield's Tele

Personal preference and all, but my big objection to Teles is the atrophied headstock.
I like Strats with the big 60s style headstock. Teles should have the small Strat style headstocks!
That tiny Tele style h.s. Just looks wrong to me.

How much did it go for?

Wow, did they really only receive two bids?

Neither the bidding guidelines nor the bidding tutorial mention anything about bidding in person, so maybe two bids is really all they got.

If so, I doubt they got anything close to the million that Dan Erlewine was expecting.

Wow, selling right behind this guitar was the 1953 Telecaster famously played by Danny Gatton, which received only one bid! Probably because Heritage Auctions did a terrible job of alerting prospective bidders to its availability.

I’d guess that the sellers of both these guitars would have had much better luck on eBay.

I’m with you…sorta.
I am mostly a Les Paul guy, I have a '73 Recording and a '76 Standard but man are they heavy and chunky in comparison to a Tele.

I hated Vees and Explorers for being so awkward but I own an '84 Mockingbird and it is one of my favorites to play. The 24 fret neck and body shape are perfect for me, unfortunately, it doesn’t fit “the look” of the material I’m playing these days.

Honestly, my wife bought me a Fender EVH Wolfgang a couple of years ago and I don’t think I’ve picked up my Strat since.

I took the bullet and created an account so I could see the auction results. It was indeed a little shy of the million dollar estimate. A lot shy. Sold for $45,000.

Says it sold to a live bidder. The next guitar, Danny Gatton’s Tele, that went for $62,500.

Thanks, Pork Rind - I appreciate it. Interesting and surprising (given Dylan’s Strat), but the second cutaway and replaced pickups / overall condition mattered.

Nice to see that Gatton’s Tele got a good price.

Sparky812 - those are some typically-heavy '70’s LPs. Have you considered a swap for one that is lighter? I targeted lighter LPs and had ones from 8lbs to 9.2lbs.

I have never owned a Mockingbird, but love the shape. With the two-octave neck and the way the neck integrates into the body, I am sure it is great for up-the-neck play.

Ah. I actually wasn’t surprised that the Chainsaw Massacre Tele went so cheap (and the comparison to Clapton’s butchered Explorer fits perfectly).

OTOH, on the Gatton Tele: as a Danny Gatton fan (still like to claim “9/9/94” as the pinnacle of modern guitar playing), never have I felt so good about being so wrong.

So thank you. Thank you very much.
