"The guy upstairs" looking out for Americans

Just wait until I figure out how to blame Bush. I’m sure there must be an angle.

(Is there anyway to connect earthquakes to global warming?)

Who are you talking about? No one in this thread has said any such thing.

I always blame god when my Kings and Nines loses to Kings and Jacks.
"I CAN’T BELIEVE GOD DID THAT TO ME!!!

It makes me laugh and put things in perspective.

I just want to hear a survivor say,

“God wanted to take me, but I managed to give that asshole the slip.”

As for the OP, it ain’t just the US. The local news in Japan didn’T even begin reporting the earthquake/tsunami until at least 16 hours after it happened, and has so far been giving the majority of their airtime to the possibility that as many as 10 Japanese people may have died.

Whereas German officials at the Auswaertiges Amt (foreign office) were quoted repeatedly within the first 24 hours after the wave, stating they were “not sure whether any German tourists were among the victims.” Which is because even with thousands of them in the area there’s still the possibility that the water somehow avoided them like the plague they are.

Good heavens. One would think that German people watching the news who had friends or family in the area would want to know if their loved ones were killed or injured. How unbelieveably selfish of them.

Come ON. Of COURSE local news is reporting this global story with a local perspective.

Given how the Germans dress and behave in Thailand, I’m not sure whether their deaths would be from the tsunami or sheer embarrassment at being pudgy 45-year-old guys in thongs.

That’s not my point. What irked me was the way they tried to weasel around the uncomfortable statement that yes, most probably there would be German casualties and there would be quite a number of them.(*)

Yes. I have no problem with that.

(*) Which is still insignificant compared to the number of locals hit. Who incidentally cannot board a plane and get the hell out of there now.

Whose low specific weight increased their chances of survival.

I don’t think Abbie meant anyone in this thread; just people in general. If she’d given just one example, the comment would not have been misinterpreted.

A couple days ago, I was going to inquire about Jet Li, who I’d heard was missing. Thought better of it because I feared the reaction I’d get—“You mean all you’re worried about is one guy, just because he’s a movie star?” Found out later he’s alive and well, as is Arthur C. Clarke.

Tell me about it. One of the most obnoxious sentiments I’ve heard expressed about it (unfortunatly only one of the most) was an OP (elsewhere) complaining that, if we suffered a disaster like that no-one would be sending aid to us .

Never mind that being the wealthiest contry in the world, we might require international aid just a teensy bit less than a very poor one. Never mind that we would undoubtly get international support anyway. But most, never mind they haven’t even finished clearing the corpses of the beach and searching for the survivors before they they turn there attention away from other people’s suffing and make it all about how underappreciate the US is.

And yes, a lot more people chimed in in agreement, including noting how no-one supported us after 9/11  .

the main german destinations in Thailand are in the north of the country, which was mainly unaffected by the tsunami.
