Can people who really liked or disliked it tell me how they feel about a few other, similar dick flicks? I tend to like Apatow movies and recently enjoyed Role Models and I Love You, Man, but am not a huge fan of useless female characters and nudity. e.g. liked: Jane Lynch in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, not so much: KY-wrestlers in Old School.
Didn’t like it. Here goes.
Dick-Flicks I Liked:
Role Models
40-Year-Old-Virgin
Step Brothers (I don’t know if I should throw this in the Dick-Flick category, but I’m doing it)
Pineapple Express
Superbad
Walk Hard
Talladega Nights
Anchor Man
Dick-Flicks I Find So-So:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Dick-Flicks I Did Not Like:
The Hangover. This one borders So-So and Did Not Like
Knocked up - Everyone else seemed to like it, but it didn’t float my boat.
There really isn’t any female nudity except a brief nipple flash from Heather Graham (who does it in the context of breastfeeding a baby). She plays a stripper, but we don’t see her stripping, nor do we see any other sexual debauchery except for a couple of (rather shocking) snapshots during the closing credits.
Most of the nudity is male, and even then, it’s still non-sexual.
It’s not a sex comedy, more of a buddy pic with elements of a detective comedy. The major premise of the movie is that, with the exception of a couple of brief video snippets and some snapshots, we never really see their epic partying, we only see the aftermath.
I did think that the characterization of Ed Helms’ girlfriend as an uptight bitch was a little heavy handed, though.
What I don’t get is - if it’s good enough to be practically indistinguishable, why not just show his dick? Pretty silly.
I had a friend who had a girlfriend very much like that. He was a huge pussy. She even beat him, like they joke about in the movie - she as much bigger though.
I’m sure that would be a good way to get a NC-17 rating.
It occurs to me that maybe they exchanged “erect fake penis” for “Heather Graham nude” with the MPAA. I think sometimes filmmakers do stuff like that where they negotiate with the MPAA by cutting things in exchange for other things. “Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn” stayed in Gone With the Wind because there were other cuts.
Haven’t seen this movie yet, but anything with Zach Galifiniakis is gold. Look for his “stand-up” special, it is hilarious. I use the quotes because I’m not entirely sure what better to call it, but it is far from the typical stand up routine.
I thought 40YOV and ILYM were better than The Hangover, but RM & OS were worse.
And it looks like the film edged out Pixar for the top B.O. spot this last weekend. Not too shabby for a film with essentially no stars in it (and which probably cost little to make, too).
Worst. Trade. Ever.
I guess. It’s a silly rating system and our reaction as an audience is silly if we treat an prosthetic penis which looks real enough and a real one as vastly different things.
This movie was another one that I laughed at, although not as much as I wanted to…mostly because of the trailers.
Although I always predicate this with: For my age group (I’m 23) I don’t find a lot of things that my generation finds funny. So while people were laughing uproariously in the theater, I really wasn’t.
The Holocaust/Ring line was all kinds of hilarious though. Also because I am a GIANT sap, I really liked the ending. The way everything was OK at the end, they were still friends, he still got married…nice to see a happy ending like that.
I thought it was hilarious. I liked that there was stuff unexplained, like the chicken, and what looked like an ottoman hanging from the ceiling by sheets, and the chair that was charred and smoking.
All the actors were pretty great, but especially Ed Helms. He was good as the uptight guy who starts to lose it. And the photos at the end with him pulling out his tooth killed me.
I liked the ending too. I was happy that they didn’t make the bride a bridezilla and that the wedding went well after all that. I also liked that though Phil talked like he was super cynical and hated his life and being married and everything, it showed him at the end with his wife and his cute kid on his lap. I guess I’m a sap as well.
Also, this is hilarious:
Improvised sex swing, I think.
It woulda been incredibly sad if they never saw the groom again though. That would have been a really sad way to end a comedy movie. :dubious:
I loved it. Laughed from the start to the end. It didn’t really feel like an Apatow type movie, for the one guy who didn’t want to see it. Apatow type movies tend to be romantic comedies for men. This wasn’t really that at all. I think it was a well written script. they did a good job of flashing back and flashing forward to really tell a fun story.
Yeah, and there were a ton of great lines.
As far as the prosthesis goes I wonder if it has more to do with the guy not wanting to stick his dick in some lady’s mouth, rather than a rating issue.
Fun stuff all around.
I guess I’m just jaded towards modern comedies’ versions of love and marriage.
It reminds me of screenwriting class in college. Every couple broke up, every guy was in a loveless marriage, and every spouse hated the other cuz that’s “real life man”.
Yeah not for everyone.
(by the way…did I mention I’m a giant sap)
I assume the lady had an opinion about it as well
I saw it last night and loved it. Of the half-dozen movies I’ve seen this year, it was probably my second-favorite, and were I not a huge Trek nerd, I might have even put it at number one.
The best line in the entire movie was “Tigers love pepper. They hate cinnamon.”
“Not at the table, Carlos.” almost made me pee. I loved it.
This movie was epic. Loved every minute of it. The only downside was that I had the big mystery solved right at the beginning. Apparently the entire cast is already signed on for a sequel, I’ll be in line opening night.
