Excuse me, whilst I go pre-order.
Wow. I’ll be getting that too.
Have you read Ernest K. Gann? If not, I highly recommend The High and the Mighty and Fate is the Hunter. I also liked “Gentlemen of Adventure”, although it’s not quite up to the standard of the other two.
Oh, and also Band of Brothers.
I’ve never read any of his stuff. I do, however have a 1940s-vintage (first printing?) edition of God Is My Co-Pilot. IIRC, it has ‘approved by the censors’ stamps on it.
Man, you’ve got to read Fate is the Hunter. Essential reading for pilots.
How about Richard Bach? I’m not a fan of his new-agey stuff, but A Gift of Wings is a great collection of aviation writing.
I liked Jonathan Livingston Seagul when I was like, ten. I don’t think I could stomach it now. My first girlfriend gave be Reflections just before she dumped me. (I guess it was a hint.) I found it amusing.
Did you ever see the documentary of Richard Bach and some friends barnstorming through the American Midwest in vintage biplanes?
I missed that documentary, but I’ve wanted to see it.
A Gift of Wings is nothing like Jonathan Livingstone Seagull or Illusions. It’s a straight up set of short stories and historical anecdotes about aviation that are just beautifully written. After I read that I thought that Bach, Gann, and Antoine Ste. Exupery were the three best aviation writers in the 20th century.
Of course, I love St. Ex.
