- There’s a rebel band fighters near the borders of Tailand and Burma, led by a couple of 12-year olds (Htoo is their family name). The 12 year olds are said to posess mystic powers because (aside from a lucky initial incident) they are twins, and they also have . . . -black tongues. Is this a crock or not? I found no photographs of the tongues in question. I can’t recall ever seeing anyone with a naturally black tongue; even Blacks (those of African descent) have tongues that are pretty clost to what Whitey’s looks like I.E., pink, mostly; a darker red perhaps, but certainly not black. Can humans have naturally black tongues? Is there some condition that would cause your tongue to turn black (aside from licking a magic marker, that is)? - MC

Licorice will do it. Also, a sufficiently dark red win. Doesn’t help you re the Htoos, I know. Sorry
Maybe the bitch of whom they are sons was a chow-chow…

“BLACK TONGUE occurs occasionally. The upper surface of the tongue turns black or brown in color, and in some cases the papillae elongate. This is an unsightly condition but not harmful”
It goes on to say that conditions like this can be caused by reactions to medication, smoking, lack of vitamins etc. I seem to remember it mentioned in one report (right after the botched hospital takeover) that these kids smoked quite a few cigars, certainly a possible cause.
