But they don’t need ‘moral authority’. They have the law, and Hunter can go to prison over this, like anyone else who thinks the law doesn’t apply to them because they are smarter or don’t recognize the legitimacy of the government.
I heard all these arguments before on other boards, from Republicans when they were being called to testify. The committee is a sham, has no legitimacy, yada yada. And I made the same arguments to them. When you are issued a subpoena, it’s not optional. You aren’t the person that gets to decide that the subpoena is somehow invalid because you don’t like the cut of the committee’s jib. Shut up and show up.
.
The difference is that one committee was in good faith and this one is not. That’s a real and important difference, even if you’d prefer not to acknowledge it. It doesn’t necessarily mean Hunter was legally in the right (though we’ll see), but it does mean that the subpoena was, at least morally and ethnically, illegitimate.
Sure he can. He’ll share a cell with Jim Jordan, Scott Perry, and Andy Biggs. That’s a court case I’d LOVE to hear. “Your honor, it’s perfectly okay that I didn’t do this thing, but THAT guy should be punished!”
I realize moral authority means squat. But you continue to say things similar to “like anyone else” as if this is true. It’s not. Maybe Biden will go to prison for this. And that will be a travesty since the contempt citation issues from a body subject to the same rule, but unwilling to hold their own members accountable.
Your comments that Biden wants to make this a spectacle and the GOP shouldn’t give in because rules…Jesus Christ. That’s what is most important here, eh? The GOP is a corrupt, illegitimate entity, subservient to a vile, despicable, hateful, dangerous man. This whole charade is an attempt to hobble the president and jeopardize his re-election. If they’re successful, it could be the end of our democracy.
But let’s dick around arguing about protocol and the rule of law and what the best GOP strategy is for questioning Hunter, as if this is all normal.
I would say if you read what I wrote, you’d see I made no claim whatsoever about “modifying the transcript “. And the mainstream media has a track record of publishing facts, not hiding them.
I’m still trying to understand why our special friend believes the House can convict Hunter of anything. They can find him in contempt of Congress and refer the case to the DOJ but how can they convict him of contempt? This is repeated more than once by SS but I have no idea what he is talking about here. Hunter is a private citizen plus I’m unaware of any circumstance where the House has the power to convict anyone of anything.
The house has the power of arrest and there is a jail in the building. But no, the House will vote on a contempt citation that was released by the committee. If they vote for it, they turn it over to a U.S. attorney for potential prosecution. Which would probably not happen, so you have a point.
But they could have arrested Hunter there today and litwrally held him in contempt. They have that power. They just haven’t used it in a long, long time.
Cite for the assertion that the House or either branch of Congress operate a jail. Please?
This article from 2019 says Congress no longer runs a jail. In fact it appears they haven’t exercised the power to arrest and detain in over 100 years, according to the Reuters article from 5 years ago.
Which still leaves your unsupported assertion that the House could “convict” Hunter, or anyone else, of anything. So please, provide a cite for that. Hmmmmm?
Showing up was a boss move on Hunter’s part and it really made the Republicans look like a bunch of fools. Unfortunately most members of the house GOP don’t have any sense of shame and are thus unconcerned with being made to look like fools.
Yes. The Dems will run against the “Do Nothing” Republicans. All bitching and moaning and bloviating, and not a goddam thing gets done with these dopes in charge.
About Hunter testifying in public- he doesn’t know any big secrets, so why not talk publicly? The Trumps probably did know super sekrit things, so they talked privately. Putting aside the dishonesty of the committee, people are right in that if they want to talk to him, why not make it public? They want to be seen making waves (same as the State of the Union speech) so go for it.
Yeah it was funny how they had to rapidly change their pre-planned speeches to be in the second-person instead of third-person, and didn’t even make sense in context. “What is he afraid of!?” yeah because agreeing to answer any and all hostile questions in front of a likely audience of tens of millions is the very definition of fear.
(and unlike MAGAs, he can’t plead the fifth. Because even doing that once would be spun as a confession)
Also, let’s assume they vote he’s guilty of contempt, hand it over to Garland, and a new Special Prosecutor is named. Does anyone really think that the GOP will accept any finding of “Innocent”, or evidence that the SP is anything but impartial?
“Hunter Biden is more than welcome to come in front of the committee. If he wants to clear his good name—if he wants to come and say, you know, these weren’t 20 shell companies, they actually did something—he’s invited today. We will drop everything.” - James Comer
“We’re in the downhill phase of this investigation now because we have so many documents, and we can bring these people in for depositions or committee hearings, whichever they choose.” - James Comer
James Comer had an opportunity to do what he said he would do today and he ignored requests to do so. James Comer is not a forthright and dependable person.
Hunter Biden didn’t leave while they were deciding whether or not to question him. Requests to question him right then and there were simply ignored. Hunter Biden left when it looked like Marjorie Taylor Greene was going to show poster sized nudes of Hunter Biden to everyone present. Again. She’s super into showing off three foot tall nudes of Hunter Biden in congressional hearings.
Some clips:
Moskowitz points out that Comer had openly offered Hunter Biden the opportunity to testify publicly and suggests they vote on doing so right there. He is ignored.
Nancy Mace says Hunter Biden doesn’t have the balls to answer her questions, and Moskowitz again suggests that they vote on questioning Biden right then and there. He is ignored again.
James Comer is not making a good faith effort to get Hunter Biden’s testimony and because of this any criminal contempt referral won’t go anywhere.
