The ideal social utopia (according to right-wingers and left-wingers)

In this thread, I would like to sidestep economics for a moment (should we be capitalist? socialist? communist?) and look only at the social aspects for a moment.
I would like to ask the right-wingers and left-wingers to craft their ideal America in terms of what it would look like, socially. To help steer the discussion, let’s frame it in terms of a few questions:

**
What’s the racial mix? ** For a leftist America, maybe 40% white, 60% non-white? For a rightist America, maybe 90% white and 10% non-white?

**What happens to people who promote unpopular opinions? ** In a leftist America, can a creationist be fired? In a rightist America, can a socialist or pro-choicer get fired? Will anyone go to prison for promoting unpopular views?
**
Marriage/sexuality: ** In a leftist America, SSM would be legal, of course, but what about polygamy? What’s the ideal percentage of gays and lesbians? Would you like the population to be 30% LGBT? 70% LGBT? 0% LGBT? What would be the legal marrying age?

**Religion: ** Should the ideal America be 0% Christian? 20% Christian? 95% Christian? Overwhelmingly atheist? Buddhist? Shinto? Muslim? How free would people be to express their religious views?
**
Gender breakdown: ** Should the ideal America be 45% male, 55% female? The other way around? Or maybe an exact 50-50% balance? (Bear in mind that oftentimes the gender in the minority is the gender with the societal advantage.)

**Crime and law enforcement: ** Should the ideal America have only rehabilitation centers and no prisons? No death penalty? Or maybe thousands of executions every year? Maybe allow double jeopardy? Maybe The Purge?

Population size: Would the ideal America have a population of 100 million? 320 million? (roughly today’s size) 500 million? Would there be a One-Child or Two-Child Policy akin to China’s?

**The opposition: ** How would liberals be treated in a right-wing utopia? How would conservatives be treated in a left-wing utopia?

Don’t care

Promote whatever views you want. Just don’t incite violence, and respect poeple’s privacy. Which I would extend to mean, if you are anti-abortion and wish to protest it, it should be done from a respectable distance from any know abortion clinics

Don’t care about the percentages. If the legal experts can figure out a way to hash out the legal issues associated with poly marriages, than we should make these types of marriages legal. Personally, I don’t think it would be all that hard to do.

Again, don’t care about the percentages. As long as it’s kept out of school and government, I’m cool.

Don’t care.

No death penalty. NO MORE PRIVATE FUCKING PRISONS! There should be no prison lobby at all for crying out loud. You’d think that would be obvious, but fuck me. Definitely more funding towards rehabilitation. But we’re still going to need prisons.

Not sure. But I think our current population size seems about right.

Treated with respect.

I’m a lefty.

What he said. I’d add that talking politics of any stripe on social media results in instant banning.

Lefty/socialist. My utopia would be where people are considerate of others and recognize that most of us are just trying to go the best we can.

I’ll go along with GRR. We will need some prisons, but they should be more humane than current ones. And far fewer and attempt rehab. Why would I want to put percentages on the other things. They will be what they will be. And all views that don’t actually incite riots and the like would be respected.

Obviously lefty.

I agree with Grrr! on every point, save one: the U.S. is badly overpopulated. We’re running short of drinking and irrigation water. We drink the Colorado River dry. We’re sucking up the deep, old aquifers, and we’re paying the price in saline incursion (Florida) and sinkholes (Oklahoma.)

We’re crowded, which is amazing in a country this damn big. 100 million would still be too many, but that would be a vast improvement over what we have today. (And seven billion worldwide is just nucking futs.)

agree. In an ideal social utopia, your rights end when they intrude on mine, and vice versus. What color you are, whom you sleep with, what weirdo beliefs you hold, who cares as long as you don’t try to force your views on others or intrude on their rights.

I don’t know what to do about the overpopulation problem. I don’t think forcibly preventing people from spawning is ethical, so I guess we are stuck with social pressure. The first thing to do is promote contraception, offer free vasectomies, and make it cool to be a non-breeder and very uncool to crank out five of them. Then, stop all tax breaks for people who reproduce and stop public funding of schools. Social pressure is pretty powerful and being actually forced to pay the full price for your kid is even more powerful.

I could go along with all the rest, but not that! You’d end up with a generation of ignorance. Imagine an entire generation home schooled! We’d become a third world cesspool inside thirty years!

Libertarian here.

Doesn’t matter. Under libertarian policies, people of all races live together and prosper. The United States became the world’s best and most prosperous country by welcoming everyone: white, black, Hispanic, Asian, and any combination thereof. Through most of the nineteenth century, the door was wide open. Only near the end of that century did we start throwing up immigration barriers based on racism and fear-mongering. The fear-mongering has always existed, but we’re better off when we ignore it. In the 1840’s, some people said that Irish immigrants would destroy the country. Instead they became a large and vital part of the country. So did every other wave of immigrants, regardless of where they came from.

Houston, TX is American’s most racially diverse metropolitan area. It is a thriving place with rapid growth, many new businesses being founded, and a large, prosperous middle class. A fine example of how people of all races can live together when government doesn’t interfere.

See the First Amendment. All opinions are legal, though some laws against death threats, etc… remain.

As for who can get fired, private employers should be able to fire a person for any reason, though not to break contracts. The government or any employer linked to the government should not be able to fire (or refuse to hire) anyone for their beliefs or for any non-job-related reason. So what happened to Kelvin Cochran, for example, should be illegal.

There’s no ideal percentage. It is whatever percentage it is, about 1-2% gay and there’s no reason to try pushing it higher or lower.

Again I refer you to the First Amendment. Everyone should be completely free to hold their religious beliefs and express them without the government interfering. This includes government employees, school children, business owners, pharmacists, and everyone else. The government should not ban Muslims from entering or leaving the country, should not force Catholic nuns to pay for birth control, should not prevent Jewish butchers from being Kosher, should not prevent Native Americans from making their traditional costumes, and should not do anything else that prevents anyone from expressing their religious beliefs.

Probably best the way it is.

Prison should only be used for those convicts that are judged to be likely to commit violent crimes, were they not imprisoned. For non-violent criminals, we should look to mandatory community service and other responses focused on rehabilitation. And of course, many things that are crimes should not be crimes at all.

I expect the population to continue growing as immigrants continue to arrive. There is plenty of space for everyone. Those who are worried about the country being overcrowded should take a drive around the Dakotas, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah. There are hundreds of millions of acres of open land in this country. It is not the least bit crowded.

Intermixed to the point that the question is meaningless.

Ignored, educated or argued with, depending on the opinion and the person holding it.

The ideal would be 100% bisexual, as that permits the widest variety of romantic linkages.

EDIT: And yes, I know that biology makes that unachievable short of genetic engineering. But, utopia…

The ideal would be 100% atheist, with religion being a weird historical phenomenon. But that’s less “leftist” than “atheist”; a religious leftist would no doubt feel otherwise.

50/50.

No death penalty, prisons for the truly dangerous & incorrigible, a focus on rehabilitation for most criminals.

Less than 100 million, at least until technology advances farther so we aren’t using up resources faster than they can be replenished. Also, to allow for future population growth if/when life extension technology is invented.

The ideal way to get to that number would be the widespread use of birth control.

Right wingers would be ignored, or just not exist (it’s a utopia after all).

I’m going to submit another motion for what Grrr! said with one addition.
If you want to drive any sort of motor vehicle you have to have licensing and training procedures and standards at least equal to or greater than the standards for Commercial Drivers Licensing for tractor-trailer drivers today, plus a background and psychological stress test and evaluation to help determine what sort of driver you might be likely to be.
