The Iditarod -- anyone else following it?

I followed this dogsled race last year and am doing so again this year. I find it really fascinating for some reason.

Is anyone else?

I’m somewaht interested, but am not actively following it.

Their websiteis letting me track the teams on line. There are a couple of interesting strategies in play. One guy ran straight out at maximum speed, then took his mandatory 24-hour rest period. Once that’s over, he will probably move out again at a speed that will overtake everybody just when they are having to take their required rest. Last year’s winner seems to be going for a more moderate approach, not exactly slow, but steady and saving up his dogs’ strength for later.

Myself, I’m rooting for last year’s second place musher, currently running third.

I just looked up Susan Butcher to see if she still participated in any fashion and am saddened to see she died of leukemia in 2006.

Thanks for the link. Between that and the evening news I’ll stay generally informed. Who knows, maybe we’ll recognize some of those Bering Sea Gold fellas at the finish line.

I follow it a little bit, mostly because one of the qualifying races starts/ends in my town, and because my dog’s vet has raced it (think he came in last!)

Dog sledding is definitely pretty cool. We watch our local race start just about every year - they close down the main drag of downtown and run them right through town to start the race. Always a good time.
